Start by developing a lyrical cadence. The procession of rhythm should tie in to the lyrical cadence. Get a feel for how the instrumental events in the song flow with the vocals you wish to accent.

From there, develop lyrics that flow with the cadence. Whether or not you wish to make your lyrics "meaningful" is up to your own discretion. What's more consequential is how you actually shape the lyrical events with the musical ones. Following a pattern of events (Chorus>1st verse>2nd verse> Chorus repeat> 3rd verse, etc.) that fit with the instrumental events generally help.

Once you've got a feel for how you wish for the sequence to follow, go back and see if you wish to alter the cadence, or lyrics, or events to something more fitting. Edit as you see fit.

Write something that has meaning to you. Death of a friend, your first crush, happiest moment, whatever it is, think about it.
Write a rough draft, then make a rhyming scheme and switch a few words. Of course, you don't have to make it rhyme, but you'd probably still have to switch up some words.

It normally works out for me, with both songs and poetry. ^^

First, I'd write some really, deep, emotional stuff, then try to find good sayings or quotes or rhymes or whatever that could relate to it. Then just think of rhyming stuff o-o

@drakanns: Or this.
