How to make someone feel better

Hi basil, I hope you guys are doing well on your AP exams

I have a question for you all. Today my friend was horribly depressed, mainly because he claimed that he had failed his AP Spanish exam.

Of course, I tried to make him feel better, by saying encouraging things such as "I'm sure you did fine."

But, in the end, he kept feeling down and wouldn't cheer up. I felt uncomfortably awkward in that particular situation.

So my question is this: how do you cheer up somebody or make them feel better...without you/them feeling awkward?

p.s. Sorry about the ambiguity of the question, I saw no other way to phrase it haha.

I keep warning people about AP Spanish test and people ignore me. Then why they suffer I'm like, "I told you."

buy tacos and place them where he could see them
and then at the end of the day dress up as a giant taco and jump him and whisper
"you failed me"

just keep on doing what you are doing. I'm sure that next time he'll pass easily.

Even if he did fail, he'll learn from his mistakes.

Well really you already did quite well. It does help people to know someone is there for them and someone believes in them but in some situation they gotta get over it themselves.
A lot of times though talking about the topic that depresses them only makes it worse. You could also try distracting him with a different topic or activity. If that doesn't work he needs time for himself.

You can only cheer someone up that is open for it. So yeah, if your attempts do nothing just stop it and let them grow on the situation instead.
