Wireless but no wired connection?

Like 3 days ago, a tech guy from Time Warner cable came to activate my internet, and I let him use my laptop to check it (I think he changed a few settings too).
Wireless now works but there is no wired connection o.o

The little lights on the back of the modem where the wire goes are not lit. I tried all four sockets.
Is there a manual fix? I really don't want to call them again
Do you have the compTIA A+ certification? Just wondering.
I never bothered to get that or the Net+ or CCNA certs... I was too busy doing all that stuff as part of my job anyway to take the time out to actually take the tests.
I probably should have since my employer would have paid the fees, but I just never got around to it.
Unfortunately that company went under as part of the economic downturn, so that opportunity is gone. Maybe I'll get around to it some day.
Well I followed those instructions (there were actually like 7 devices listed) and enabled the only one that wasn't, and it worked!
Cool..! Great to hear it's working..!

@BobR: Yes, just one wire

Correct

Well for some weird reason the light is on NOW but it still shows no connection </3
And there is no light on my laptop

Well I followed those instructions (there were actually like 7 devices listed) and enabled the only one that wasn't, and it worked!

Thanks a lot! <3

Ok, so your setup is a single wire going from your laptop directly to the modem, plugged into one of the LAN sockets on the modem.

And from what you said, this is a new installation..? That is, the wired connection to the Internet has never worked here before..?

It's odd that you're not getting a "link light" on the LAN port of the modem. Normally that's automatic and isn't affected by the setups at either end.
Is there an LED next to the LAN socket on your laptop..? If there is, did it used to light up in your other house, but isn't working now..?

The first thing to check would be to go into the Device Manager on the laptop (Right-click "My Computer", click "Properties", click the "Hardware" tab, then click the "Device Manager" button), and find "Network Adapters" on the Device Manager list.

Click the "+" next to "Network Adapters"... there should be two entries, one for the Wireless and one for the wired Ethernet adapter.
Right click the line for the Ethernet adapter and see if the second line on the popup menu says "Enable".
If it does say "Enable", it means the wired adapter is currently disabled. Click where it says "Enable" to turn it back on.

If it's disabled, it's possible the installer guy changed it assuming you'd want to use the Wifi.

@BobR: Failure to understand the first question

It was, and can be, but made no difference.
Wired directly to the back of the modem.

The wire works, also tried with 2 others
The only two places to plug in (one cable that screws in, one for power) are used. There are only 4 LAN spots

Doesn't look unplugged as far as I can trace it

I had the same modem before moving into this house and it worked fine

What EXACTLY is your setup like..?

Is your computer right by the modem..?
Or is it wired to it through the house somehow..?

The lack of a light on the modem next to the cable shows that there is no PHYSICAL link to your computer.
That could be caused by the other end of the cable being unplugged somewhere (most likely), or a bad cable (unlikely if it worked before).

Try to trace where the wire goes from the modem and see if it's been unplugged anywhere along the way.
