How do fads start/spread?
I'm talking about things like....uhhh, idk the term "jelly," this new harlem snake thing, bieber fever, gangnam style, etc. Is it really as simple as:
1. Someone does it.
2. Other ppl like it and start doing it too.
3. Trend keeps chaining out to other ppl until b4 u know it hundreds of millions of ppl are doing it.
Is it really that simple?

I personally think most of these new fads are just plain weird and annoying. My opinion though. Don't take it the wrong way.
Famous person does it on youtube then everyone else follows
common factor = music and dance, which are both universal "languages"
has to be catchy and easy enough for the average person to do.

I don't hear people use it as much as they used to now so I forgot it existed.
Jelly is a shortening of jealous, it's easier to type too. Also imageboards liked making pictures of it.
There is two ways, post it somewhere popular and it catches on, you keep posting it everywhere until it is popular.

The word you're looking for is "silly". For example planking, it wasn't stupid but it was silly when it started. Then people started to get creative and decided to plank on some abnormal objects/places.
