Black Ops Local Split-Screen

Hey guys,
So I just got Black Ops today and I want to play local split-screen multi-player against my friends. When I try to do so, it makes me log in to my LIVE account. My live account's membership expired, however...So I sign into it, but I don't know how to go from there. Do we need an account with Live that hasn't expired yet?
