I'm five badges in (out of 8 I believe) and I'm wondering if there's anything purposeful after you beat the gym leaders? Is it necessary to fight the Elite Four? There's a conclusion to the vague plot, right?
I'm playing Sapphire and it's an okay game. I was never able to get into Pokemon before, it always boring to me but for some reason I gave it another shot a couple of days ago and I found myself enjoying the mind-numbing aspect of it. Out of curiosity, do the other Pokemon games follow the same basic premise? Beat the gym leaders, progress through the side plot, etc? I might consider getting X/Y since I have a 3DS and I could play it without being emulated, but I'm not sure it would be worth it. Gimme your opinions and help a girl out.

Yes, they all have the same formula. Choose starter>Destroy gym leaders>Destroy rival>Destroy evil organization>Destroy Elite Four
X/Y is okay but they give you a free EXP share which makes it incredibly easy to slaughter any NPC that crosses your path. And I think it's pretty boring post-game.

Yes you have to beat the elite four. IMO it's the best part of the game

i don't remember if you unlock anything after the elite four in sapphire and ruby, but for emerald i think you had to beat them to gain access to the battle frontier. X/Y was too easy for me and i can never get into competitive battling so i got bored of it within a few weeks

for some reason playing on a emulator makes the game 100 times more boring for me then actually playing it on a hand held system.

Yeah, pretty much the only great thing about Pokemon X/Y was the competitive battling.

I stopped playing after Diamond but returned for X. Really liked battling people (rating battles) with my bizarre team and sprucing them up to do well.

Although X/Y introduce a new story and region, I would wait until Omega/Alpha come out if you want to be up to date, both games come out in November.

Emerald has the best and most gameplay compared to every other game in terms of things to do outside the story, after the elite four, side quests, and not to mention the amazing battle frontier. Best place ever so much variety of battles and arenas.

I suggest you get a 3DS XL and wait for pokemon omegaruby / alphasaphire to come out. pokemon x/y isnt too bad either but the aftergame was really lacking for a game of its time and considering its a 3ds game.
