I joined PETA when my pet cow died. I wanted to make steak out of it before it got too fat but animal rights organists like PETA banned me from doing so. So I'm an undercover agent.

I used to feed a stray dog that ran around the neighborhood. I would bring home meat from the deli where I work, just meat we weren't going to use for anything, and I would let him eat to his heart's content. He grew attached to me, and I, to him. My apartment didn't allow pets, though. Anyway, one day I came home and saw him walking alongside some family. Must've been four of 'em. A mother, a father, and two children, all laughing while the dog trotted along at their side. One big perfect family. The dog turned and saw me, and without missing a beat, looked back to his new family and left with them.

You must understand, I had no one. I was miserable. I took to the drink; before I knew it, I was drowning my sorrows in bottles of red wine. I didn't even like red wine, but I liked the effect. It allowed me to forget. But you cannot forget recurring themes, and abandonment is one of life's major ones: people come and go, and so do dogs, apparently. At the time, I was sideswiped; utterly wrecked. Other animals came along. Cats. I don't like cats. Cats aren't even subtle about it; they'll leave as soon as they don't need you. The dog -- he reminded me of myself, in a better time. He was so trusting, so goddamned trusting. Later, I was able to come to terms with it, be happy, even, that the dog joined a family and probably lives in a warm house. But at the time, I was just--

But hey, no, it's totally cool that you're joining PETA.
