How would that even work? Would we be united in an invisible ghost body, doomed to float around and haunt people for all eternity? Or would I keep my body, and his being would simply merge with my consciousness? Would I hear his voice in my head?

I don't want to die, but the first option doesn't sound much better. Why can't he just stay in ghost form and be my ghost friend?

That depends on a number of situations. If the ghost is still there as a GHOST because they never got to live their life fully, died for noble reasons, or other good reasons, I'd let them fuse with my soul. Provided, that means they don't have control over my body.
