in terms of tone and being OTT, G Gundam and Star Driver would fit the bill nicely. also check out Getter Robo (i haven't gotten around to it) which i can give a good example of why it would be up your alley: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nujP0ghAoho
for just straight up good mecha, look into other Gundam series (older ones first...Seed, 00, and AGE are all pretty meh. Unicorn is good though) or something obvious like NGE or Big O. RahXephon is somewhat of a mecha show, more in the vein of NGE but it's good too. Eureka Seven and Rinne no Lagrange are supposed to be good but i've only heard about them, not actually seen more than a few episodes.
