the bad guys in media
before the 1990s, the bad guys in all the movies, video games, and comics would be russian and chinese communists. organized crime, shooters, james bond, etc.
now they're all middle eastern terrorists. iron man, james bond, first person shooter games, you name it.
amazing how media changes to reflect the opinions of the public.

russians have some movie villain presence like in mission impossible ghost protocol and iron man 2 but usually it's middle eastern terrorists, or more recently, home grown americans under the disguise of middle eastern terrorists
I think relevance of political realities also play a role here. Russia isn't exactly our biggest worry in a post-9/11 America.
