How come Amir is afraid to be friends with Hassan?

Like bubba127 said, though it's slightly more complicated than that. It's mainly because of how the followers of Prophet Mohammed sought to find his successor. It was between his direct relative/descendant or to his closest friend (I think it was, correct me if I'm wrong). And Amir's family belongs to the ones that believed in direct relation (I think it was) and Hussan and the rest of the Hazaras (think its spelled that way) believed in the other guy.

And because their society if based around that principal, you can relate it to Pre Civil War racism. It's like saying a 1830's family letting their white children becoming best friends with their black slaves' children. It's frowned upon in their society.

they are from different social groups, hassan's family is technically supposed to be amir's family's slaves
