The oldest Screenshot on Basilmarket
Since basilmarket has been around since 2005 (i think) i was wondering if anyone knew what the oldest Screenshot and video on this site would be?
i cant seem to find any that date earlier than 2008 and I'm interested in looking at some nostalgic screenshots.
also, was wondering the same thing about videos.
and if there's a way for me to sort the by the date they were added, can someone please explain how to do that, i haven't been around on basilmarket that long.
my friend showed me it like back in 2006, but we never really used it, and i just recently started using it to keep updated with the game since i quit. (because im passionate about the game, i just don't enjoy it that much anymore).

percentage-wise, you can't even deny that the community was little bit nicer in general back in the day.... can you?
Big Bang was two years ago.. wow.
back then... trolling was friendly.

YA THATS RIGHT BURN THE BRAIN CELLS
What struck me the most is that I couldn't find ONE SINGLE comment on the old basil where people are insulting someone/trolling.
Holy crap what happened?
Sleepywood was more popular at the time.
Then Sleepywood was taken from the hands of Maple-Radio who Maur thought it'd be a good idea. Turns out, he killed Sleepywood all together ^_^ Nobody even posts in that section anymore.
I have the full agent suit on one of my accounts.. that got banned.
I'm a sad cookie

@PhoenixShots:
mind you more people probably use this site to discuss maplestory, than the official website.. so...
Ah~~~
Basil's community was just as horrible back then as it was now, if not worse.
No it wasn't. In 2005 it was more noobity, like most players were. The elitists hung out on SW. In 2006, it started getting better and larger. This progressed, and in 2007, people that had originally bashed Basil for being full of noobs started silently making Basil accounts for themselves to participate in the forums with. A lot of these players were spammers and trolls from SW, /chan/, etc, but a lot of them actually wanted to have their own Basil accounts to auction & forum with. This trend continued into 2008, where the site started to rapidly gain members and was losing most of it's "noob" status with the majority of the MS community. Around this time, the site had already passed SW as a larger site and was generating far more hits, thus more revenue, than SW.
By late 2008, and on into 2009, Basil was the largest MS-related website. It still is. It had almost completely lost it's "noob" status, at least by everyone but haters, trolls, and especially those that were SW-biased, butthurt, & defeated. People didn't like elitists. The public had spoken. The site peaked that year, and had been earning over $300 a day for mrb. It was officially THE MS website to be on. Things on the staff started going downhill towards the end of 2008 though.
In April of 2009, the majority of the original staff of 3+ years left, minus Eric who had left already a few months before, and Misa, who was never hardly around anyway. We 5 took something that was once considered "full of noobs" and crafted it into somewhere that people actually abandoned SW to join. When we left, what we molded into something more-respectable, fell to complete crap and chaos.
It took years for the site to get back a lot of it's traffic, and it never did recover from the trolls and hate that was allowed in to exist after we left. When the eFame staff took over, and the respectable members (read pros*) in the MS community started abandoning the site's forums for other less-active, more elitist forums, Basil's forums went from what they had been, to multiple times worse than ever. Now they have the traffic of 2007/8, with a higher per capita of trolling and hate, and a less active staff to clean it up. This ran people off and decreased revenue for the site.
And that's what happened to BasilMarket.
damn... looking back at this... bring such good memories...
I remember when the top screen for the longest time was BSUCLA's Dragon Falt o.o

Haha I remember back in the days when I would still use Magic Bolt at third job on enemies with low HP after I hit them with with Ice Strike, JUST to save some MP pots.
I remember when we couldn't jump down from platforms, and the most agile classes were only sins.
And people complain about grinding today....
yeah, but the most mobile were definately mages because of teleport.
level 1 teleport made you faster than max level haste .
on a side note :
does anyone else remember old school savage blow? where at level 1 it would only hit twice. and as you leveled it up it would hit more times and eventually would hit 6 times?
savage blow was what made me make a Bandit haha .
although i was jealous of Flash jump of sins, i still liked the game better when FJ was exclusive....
now everyone and their mother has FJ...

Nostalgic Romanticization of the Past...Yup happens everywhere...even in Maplestory.

Reasons :
>> is under "godly items"
>> everyone is amazed

Remember when all these numbers were impressive? Also check the experience bar; Nowadays you'd be at about 85%~ with that.
Gosh, I want just keep going through all these screen shots. So many memories!
Edit - Oh, I have to share this one: http://web.archive.org/web/20051216173623/http://www.basilmarket.com/show/screen/124/0/Sleepywood_graveyard.html

@Creeper: An avatar like that would never be found in the old ms ~

third comment. ohhh how he must feel if he still plays be careful what you wish for.
@Wordolio: ikr if you get 40% in one hour at level 40, people would say you're doing something wrong. I also loved how zakum used to be a hard boss that took 10 hours plus to solo
Wrong. The page must not have been archived properly because I started playing at v0.14, which was in December 2005 (coincidentally when Windia released), and quit late 2007 or early 2008 at v0.34.
EDIT: Unless you're talking about SEA or JMS/KMS or something?
Same I started playing at the exact same time as you.
I teared up.
The front page of that link shows that the most recent update was v34 or something and that was the Sharenian GUild quest, which was in 2005 according to the timestamped posts.
I've been playing since v28, patch before zakum which means I've been playing since late 2004, early 2005. It's quite amazing and beautiful and sad that almost 10 years have passed and I'm still playing this game, and in that time frame so much has happened in my own life
Sorry for random comment.
you shouldn't apologise for sharing that,
i enjoy reading other people's stories, especially since i can sorta relate.
i started in 2006, but i can agree, it's been a long while and so much has changed.
while i did enjoy the newer maple for a while in 2011-2012, i feel like it's just getting absurd now.
potential, enhancements and extra pendant slots was one thing.
but now there's nebulites and ADDITIONAL potential.
when will it ever end man....

@Announcment: yeah, i remember when CPQ was released. i thought the exp was abosolutly ridiculous. (like 40%+ an hour at level 40+) but i totally took full advantage of it, since i was pretty sure it was only an event because of how ridiculous the exp was.
nowadays, 40% an hour at level 40 would be bottom of the barrel exp.t
@Wordolio: Back even before CPQ was out was the fun days I had some screenshots but then I deleted them cause my computer was getting slow D:
Mages were actually really unbalanced at first job, as they had mastery built into their skills. At level 18 you would have maxed magic claw, with 60% mastery. No other class could come close to your damage, except for maybe the golden-unicorn godly funded DEXless thief with ilbis. At the kerning PQ boss stage, the only class of any use were mages with their magic claw, due to the King Slime's huge physical defense and low magic defense.
Magicians were king.
I thought it had more to do with the fact that mages had incredible accuracy.
I recall making my own i/l wizard back in those days to quickly train in slime tree and in Florina
@Announcment:
i know, before then it was all about the teleport mages had. it was a HUUUGE advantage, especially in vertical maps like helios/eos/orbis towers.
aswell as multiple party quests such as (LPQ,LMPQ,OPQ, etc)
@Wordolio: I remember when it was between like .55 and .6 down jump move came along. . . it made moving so much easier but so much different.
Back then, to make your own godly scrolled equipment requires mesos, luck and perseverance. I remember how astonished I was when I first saw an equipment which passed more than three 10%/30%.
Now, just top up more NX
@Wordolio: haha nexon did try to let us relive the old days. . . but I didn't like the way they did it with that weird event.
i just don't feel like they went back far enough. i was hoping for the original henesys, not the v 55 or v 83 ones.
it's all about the frequency of the complaints.
back in the day, there was definately less to complain about, and there were less complaints being made.
at the same time, there was arguably more players around 2006-2008 then there is now.
percentage wise (and this is just a guess), there was probably a LOT less whiners
but don't get me wrong, there was definately whiners back in the day haha
But the community was smaller as well
With much more people now; there's bound to be more issues with different people.
But yeah, such is people.
Good old days of Basil where the Buying and Selling columns tripped everyone up. And 2m Tobis
