Why Call it Girlfriend and Boyfriend?

As both names describe a girlfriend is a girl that's a friend, same with boyfriend. So why call it that when two people are in a relationship? I just don't get it. o.o

They use it because it's indirectly linked to a close-personal relationship to the other gender. Girlfriend is often assumed to be a person being in aforementioned relationship to a girl, and same for the other gender.

In other words: Misconception or old habits of previous generations.

I like this one :O Since that's the only reason why guys look for a relationship right? And why dumb girls end up dating those guys only to lose their virginity and to end up getting dumped?
