I assume most of us here are students in high school or college/university. How do you college/university guys manage your time between studies and work? I have never studied and worked at the same time, but I want to start looking for a part-time job this semester. How are your experiences like? Do you sometimes struggle to keep up with school? Is it a piece of cake? How much free time do you get in a week?

Just wanted to get other peoples' opinions on studying while working, and how they manage their time, and to also give some tips on how to succeed. My time management is not that great, so yeah. I just want to read some personal real-life stories on your experiences with balancing your time between studies and work.

It depends. If you go to school full time and you are already hired then they have to work around your schedule. My job involves mostly physical labor and personally I just can't handle the mental stress of school and the physical stress of work constantly throughout the week, so I end up only working 2-3 days a week. At this point I just handle it as it comes and make time for myself to recover when I need it.

Do work really just work around your class schedule? And be able to request to work less or more hours per week whenever you need to? How does this whole scheduling work in a job?

Most of the time, they have no choice but to do so, especially if you work for a company that is keen on education. You have to give notice in advance that you will be starting school soon, and request a schedule change with either less work hours or a "work around" that fits to your time frames, once you're certain your schedule is set and hope no further changes will emerge. You also have to be sure to choose your class schedule wisely, with as little as possible time in between classes, or try to fit most of your classes on the few days.

For example, I have a total of 6 classes (I'm in university). This year, I was able to fit all of my classes into 3 days (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday). It's a bit challenging, but I have to myself 4 out of 7 days of the week to either work or just be at home. I working part-time about 30 hours per week. I'm could probably be able to work full-time, but it would most likely consume most of my physical and mental energy, possibly giving me little to no concentration when doing homework or projects. You need to be able to have some time for yourself to do homework or rest.

I just sent my supervisor a text saying how work and school are taking it's toll of me. I get up at 5:55 every day for a gym class and student council meetings. I then go to tennis and don't get home until 7:30; which doesn't leave a lot of room for homework when you add in dinner and shower. The only time I typically have to work on school work is on Saturdays and Sundays and those are the only days I work cause you know, I'm too busy to work during the school day. So yeah... I told her that I couldn't work during the school year anymore. I just hope she lets me work again this summer. A lot of my coworkers do that so it should be okay, I hope.

The key is scheduling, obviously. If you can schedule your classes before job hunting that would be ideal. Evening classes have worked well for me being able to work and act freely through the prime day hours (8-5). Working on campus helps a lot too. You can go to your job placement center and tell them you're interested in applying for on campus work or work study if applicable.

i got a second job recently and opened up my availability to 7 days a week, weekdays after school but now i have to figure out if i want to do graveyard shifts for my other job so that i can keep both or just quit. i don't know how it'll all work out but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger....
