Looking for Best/Adequate Antivirus Program

Hi, looking for best/adequate antivirus program--budget can be up to $60 per year, so basically the best available in the market. Actually heard some good reviews on Microsoft Security Essentials, which to me is surprising because third-party applications tend to be better (since they specialize). Eset NOD32 and Kaspersky also ones I've seen good reviews for. How does the free Avast! compare to these antivirus programs? Any other recommendations? Thanks.

Could give MalwareBytes a go, Avast is probably better, I wasn't satisfied with AVG.

I'd recommend Avast! over AVG, AVG just didn't cut it for me...I personally don't know much about MSE or Avira though.

My own AV is Kaspersky though, so its really up to you. If you are going to pay for one, pay for the full protection aka Internet Security or a "360" version.

The differences in detection rate between the antiviruses are negligible.

Simple preventative measures in the browser such as ad blockers, WOT, and for Firefox, NoScript - do significantly reduce infection risks.

Ok, so they have similar features. What about the strength of their "defenses"? Or are the differences their strengths in defending against numerous viruses and dealing with powerful viruses pretty much negligible? I download a ton of stuff and visit a lot of websites on my computer, so maybe I might need a more powerful antivirus that can detect more viruses and be able to deal with newer viruses?

Avast, AVG, and Avira are very much liked; choosing comes down to preference.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a favorite here because it has the fewest conflicts with Maplestory.

Note that all the AVs I listed are free or have free versions. Paid AVs add very few relevant features. What's most important is that you have active real-time protection and a scanning engine, all of which the listed do provide.
