Hipsters: My rant

So it`s almost midnight. Why not make a bunch of threads while I can, right?

Anyone else can't stand hipsters? Omg! They're so fake! F5 I don't know why, but I'm in a rant mood tonight.

A hipster prides him/herself on being unique. Which, in hipster language, translates to, "Not conforming to social conventions, man!" What bugs me is that they're all the same. They act all pretentious, as if they're God's gift to the Earth. In reality, they're just all like each other. Most hipsters like to think of themselves as 'artistic and deep.' They think that makes them special. They love to overuse the word, "Art" and they'll use it whenever possible... which probably explains 'Modern art' today. (Lines on paper) It's so deep, bro!

Another sign would be playing the ukulele. They love it because it is obscure. A surplus of hipsters have appeared on YouTube lately, and they are quickly taking over the internet, and pretty soon the world!

I think we need to take down the main vloggers to tackle this problem. We need to get rid of Shane Dawson, get rid of RayWilliamJohnson, get rid of Fred.

Beat YouTube, and we save the world!

I think hipster-dom is relative, and is thus null and void unless someone ACTIVELY TRIES to be on top of obscure indie bands JUST for the sake of being "unique" instead of enjoyment. What you describe is nonconformity...

Ex. my high school is filled (80%) with people you described in your thread; I'm basically one of 10 guys that listen and appreciate hip hop. Now in this case, you'd describe ME as the hipster, when I actually like hip hop out of genuine interest... I think being "artistic and deep" stands if they can prove they are, because it just means they do try and understand what they experience rather than taking it for granted.

AHAHAH he took the words out of my mouth. Especially the bass bit, i play bass aswell.

O.T - No i dont think i'm gods gift or anything like that AND i only learnt the ukulele because its another instrument? I'm actually a really musical person, i play the Bass mainly (in my band), guitar and then the ukulele, next year i'll be trying my hand at the piano.

I don't understand your hatred for vloggers.
They're obviously bored with their lives, who are you to tell them what to do?
Let them live their lives, and you live yours.

hips turds? have you truly researched on what they are? to me, they're just a bunch of people who think they stand out and listen to dubstep all day while spending all free time into social networking sites such as twitter, facebook and tumblr. but the truth is, that they're not all that unique and cool.. but then again it goes to the same to every kind of person there is, they look like an idiot, whether sporting sagging pants, "trendy" thriftstore clothes, dreadlocks, ironic t-shirts, gauged ears, skin tight jeans or whatever. it's their style and only people as "deep" and avid or poserish into their style as them will be impressed, everyone wants to belong and hipster is the new vampire which was the new scene which was the new emo which was the new goth.

More than anything I stick with my Familia, so honestly I don't care much about hip culture, but I do like to observe all kinds of things in and about culture(s), so its a bit interesting, but yea that whole 'non-conforming' thing.... they should probably pay more attention in class

A hipster (and I am talking about the modern hipster, not the original hipsters of the 40's) wouldn't even call himself a hipster, because to do so would be to conform to a group mentality. In fact ... a genuine "hipster" would hate hipsters because hating hipsters is so unique. And so is playing X instrument. Or wearing X types of clothing.

And therein lies the problem. There's no real definition for the modern hipster. People just see styles that they don't like, they attribute it to "hipsters," and as a result we've seen that hipsters have taken over everything, because anything is hipster by someone's definition of the word. There's a really awesome picture that summarizes my point perfectly, but I can't be arsed to go looking for it. In closing, I submit that you, the OP, are in fact a hipster for hating hipsters. Prove me wrong~

I don't mind hipsters. The style isn't that annoying and it could be worse.
Wow. That was a REALLY good post... you're making me rethink my whole perceptive of 'hipsters'. I don't think you'll see me complaining again any time soon!

Thanks!
lolol well it's just that if you really look at it, fashion hasn't changed at all really in the last 6 years.
a lot of the things 'hipsters' wear now are things that scene kids wore towards the end of their existence. though there are still scene kids out there, all of the real ones have expressed their fashion inspiration in ways totally different than the 'scene kids' later on.
it's just that people who meet the description of a scene kid or a hipster don't call themselves that because they're themselves.
they don't need to tell anybody what label they are because they don't consider themselves a label. it's just how they are.

personally when i think of likeee...the 60s, i think of twiggy. the 20s, claudette colbert. the 40s, marilyn monroe. the 80s, pete burns, boy george, etc
though i do think of styles from every era including hipsters today (myself seeing more of like zooey deschanel) what it really comes down to is that i see the people who stood out during those decades, the people who stood out i'm assuming being the ones who influenced a lot of the style during that era.
though in the 60s there were housewives who wore odd baby doll floral dresses, what i remember it for is twiggy and her giant top and bottom fake eyelashes, her androgynous anorexic figure, her makeup that i've now seen michelle phan attempt to emulate in dozens of her videos, and just generally her.
was the trend at the time what twiggy did? pretttty much, she's the one who influenced all models to be thin as hell. but i don't think of the wannabe twiggys or the housewives, i think of twiggy.

so when it comes down to it, years from now you'll look back all you'll remember are the people who were already doing those styles before they became trends, not all of the people who later decided to jump on the bandwagon. so it doesn't really matter if someone calls themselves a hipster to fit in or not, because regardless they'll change their style and no one will remember them anyways.
well ty fo da compliments, NOW WALL-O-TEXT

it's because people who call themselves hipsters want to be accepted in one way or another.
in my experience with watching trends change in the ways they have, there's usually single core elements in certain trends in specific decades.
where as 2000-2010 may be considered somewhat grunge, then 'emo', then scene, then hipster, in essence they all strive to be something that was portrayed previously.
being anorexic and having incredibly thin legs came from the 60s, as did the whole big top and leggings thing.
dark black eyeshadow with pale skin, fake eyelashes, 'nerdy glasses', all of that came from either the 20s or the 70s for the most part.
a lot of trends stem from people who, like myself, are in love with specific eras and dress that way.
personally i'm in love with twiggy and the 60s, while loving the 40s and 50s with marilyn monroe and the age of glamour.
because of which i love redredred lips, anorexic figure, looking child-like, gorgeous long hair, etcetcetc.

personally i don't believe i've ever really started trends, but celebrities and people who like myself find inspiration in eras of fashion and clothing, they're the ones who fueled all of this. lady gaga is i think the best example. she's borrowed more from the 80s than anyone on the planet, 'scene' being heavily influenced by the 80s and 60s.
it's because people find uniqueness gorgeous. it's funny when you think that 10 years ago, even makeup and hairstyles were totally different. that's because we saw those styles at that time as unique until everyone did it.

people generally find being unique beautiful, and when most people see someone doing something else that no one else is doing (and pulling it off) they get ideas for outfits of their own, or how they would like to dress. it's like seeing a girl with boots and then wanting to get similar boots because you see how it matches with her outfit.

my long ass wall-o-text meaning that people desperately want to be seen as beautiful, or want attention. at least the people who call themselves hipsters.
they're the same people who called themselves scene. people who jump into a label rather than being the designer of that label.

and honestly, what's more beautiful than being unique? a pearl in a sea of sapphires is still gorgeous because it isn't a sapphire.
how many people do you see that look like marilyn monroe? elizabeth taylor? or victoria beckham? or keira knightley? not many if any, because they don't look like anyone else. they aren't anyone else, the only version of them that exists is...them. that's why they're so pretty, they're unique.
and even though everyone becoming a hipster makes the 'label' itself common and ugly, they get to feel pretty for that short amount of time until that label dies and they go out to buy the nextttt label.
I agree people who call themselves hipsters pathetic. The term 'hipster' is a negative term, and I just don't understand why someone would call themself that.

You are one of the few who is genuine. You dress how you dress and like what you like because you like it and you always have. Although there are thousands who try to act like you just to feel cool, and they call themselves 'unique'. Those are hipsters. Pretending to be uncool to be considered cool... weird.
people ask me if i'm a hipster quite a bit because i wear cardigans and vintage clothing and love 'unknown bands', all of which are apparently owned by hipsters.

i think that people who go around calling themselves hipsters are the ones people should hate if anything...i've been wearing skinny jeans, listening to music no one has heard of, being in love with vintage clothing and a lot more for years and years. it's not my fault that no one else has transsexual heros, finds inspiration in anorexia or isn't unique.

this is what i would like to call the lady gaga era, the era in which everyone is trying to be different for the sake of being different, and FAILING.
individuality is dead in so many people that it's pathetic. it's probably because in society we're taught to never make mistakes and to follow a set path or a trend, but who knows. regardless, the people who call themselves hipsters are pathetic. simply put.

anyone else you may consider hipster shouldn't be generalized and hated just because you assume they are.

And yet you think about them. You lose.
Who says? I could care less if I was influenced by people. It's only natural, and it is healthier to do so. For example, if everyone was running frantically out of a building, it would be stupid to walk in.

I don't lose. I never said I was any of the things that hipsters try to be, and if I did, I would be no better than them.

@NapalmDe4th: But the thing is, it isn't what they say, it's their entire way of life.

They fake being unique. That is about the biggest fake someone can do... They say that they are their own person, but they have to follow trends that are 'unique' and automatically dislikes anything someone else likes. That is certainly not they own person. Their lifestyle relies solely on what other people do/act like, which is the very thing they claim not to do.
