Theres a god damn rat in my house

So last night at like 3am I went into my kitchen to make a corned beef sandwich, I turn the light on and then from the corner of my eye I see something move on the counter, then all I see is a huge ass black nasty looking rat run across the whole counter and jump behind the stove. So naturally I start screaming like a little girl and I ran for my life, my parents woke up and thought I was being murdered. We spent like 2 hours trying to find it but we couldn't find it anywhere.. It's gotta be hiding somewhere but I have no idea where.

Anyone ever had any experiences with mice/rats in their house? How did you get rid of them? Where could they be hiding? Thanks for your input people

@Xiscis See MoutainJew's comment.
It's Disgusting.

@Windowlegs
Either way the animal is going to perish- Pests aren't welcomed in homes. I was going to edit and speak my preference of a mouse trap, as in most cases it is quick to end it's life. But I decided against it for emphasis on the mess and lack there of with both.
I don't see how sticky traps are better if you want to speak of suffering in ways of starvation and such.

@Crispychream
It is just a rat, but it doesn't need to perish in extremely inhumane ways for sheer entertainment. (See BoredAF) -_-

Rat poison or a mouse trap will get it done. Easier to take care of in regards to mess.
Rat poison? So a nice and slow bit of brain hemorrhaging is better?

A trap? sometimes they do not die straight away and it only breaks some of their bones...they are then left there until you either sort it out or they die of starvation.
Please explain to me how a mouse will get stuck, and chew off thier limbs to get away.
When they chew off their legs, there other legs DOES NOT MAGICALLY get unstuck you know?
When a mouse goes to get food they put the front hands first then their back hands?
So they wont just magically get unstuck when htye chew off their limbs
Way to miss the entire point.

The intention wasn't "oh noes the big scurry rat might get away on three legs," it was "don't make a living creature have to chew off its own limbs."

Why make something suffer needlessly?

Sticky traps? The worst. Stuck.. and you can't move. Most rats are clever enough to chew their limbs off in order to escape. Quite the mess..

Once you find that rat, kill it and cook it. I'm sure it's full of protein.
Get those sticky strips. Mouse/rat runs over it and get stuck.Then you can hairspray+lighter them for fun or drown their backsides. Put them behind furniture along the wall.
Yea, sticky traps should do it. You can shoulder press 100 lbs, don't be scared.

Roof rats prefer enclosed or elevated spaces such as attics, walls, false ceilings, and cabinets

Regular mouse traps or cages.
Although once, I've caught an opossum in my backyard once with the caged one.
