here's a guide for ATI cards
For Nvidia cards, go into the Nvidia control panel, and look for an option called "Flat Panel Scaling", I'm not sure which option it is that you need to check(I haven't had an Nvidia card for like 6 months or so) but go through the 3 options, and see which one gets rid of the black bars.
Intel, I have no clue how to do, I have NEVER had an intel GPU lol
i have it on my laptop too and i sorta like it better that way cause on my desktop computer the characters look too fat and on my laptop it makes them look skinny
This happens on wider-than wide screen monitors, there is black bars on the sides and it makes it look awful... I get this on my dad's computer, but I have no idea how to fix the problem.

Enjoy your improper resolution.
Can you guys stop posting alt+enter when you didn't even bother to read OP's post properly and have no experience with the issue?
Alt + Enter
What video card does your laptop have? (Ati/Nvidia/intel), you'll need to go into your configuration and change your scaling options.
