Nexon

General

Very Important warning for all players

I just received a cleverly disguised phishing e-mail telling me my account was temporarily suspended for "using various Thrid Party programs". Sure it had a typo or two, but sadly that wasn't even what threw me off. ;P

It displayed the link to the login page, "http://www.nexon.net/login/etc....." telling me to open a ticket to submit an appeal. I was already logged in on the website so I just refreshed the page and saw nothing about being banned and it still displayed my rankings. I thought that was odd so I return back to the email, and when I hovered over the link I noticed the the URL actually linked to www.ncxon.net (www.ncxon.net/login/ will send you to this fake login page... ____DO NOT LOG INTO IT___)

So yeah, if anyone gets an email from nexon (supposedly) saying you've been banned... GO TO THE WEBSITE YOURSELF to find out, do NOT click the link in the email. How shifty of whoever to be sending this out during this time. Not to mention I have NO idea how anyone ever got my email that I use... Nexon/forum website leak?

blunt way: slowpoke.jpg. these emails are ages old. i've been getting blizzard emails about "my account" being suspended even though i don't have one, for years. also runescape emails saying i've been botting and to log in to verify my account. these scam emails are so blatantly obvious that nobody is being fooled, and that you almost did can only infer that you are unfamiliar with such emails.
Yeah.. you also kinda invalidated your own comment by saying I should know these things, stating how you received the Blizzard phishing emails when you don't have an account. I received a Nexon one and, oh wait, I HAVE an account. Not to mention I happened to receive it on my main acct's e-mail, when I have lord knows how many mule accounts... some of which do use popular web-based email addresses. Let's not forget to add all of the crazy recent banning that's been going on (both justified and un-justified), just makes it a tad more believable.

you kinda threw everything you said out the window, if you know "she" wouldn't know if "she" had never seen one.
why did you just do all that? you did wayyyyy to much brah. calm down.

E-mail addresses are harvested from all over the Internet, not just from common web-based mail sites.
My e-mail domain is "provide.net", and yet I get WoW phishing e-mails all the time, even though I don't even have a WoW account.
Not only that, but Royal Bank of Scotland wants me to verify my password and login info for them, just "click here" and enter all my info.

E-mail lists are cheap and easy to obtain, and if you have access to a botnet, you can spam millions of e-mails hoping to snare a few people who actually do have an account you're looking for.

ALL I can think of is recently I typed in my email for southperry's current event, to play as an unregistered user.

To everyone that says "oh it's just a random hit"; my email address is NOT a common web-based one. It belongs to my own personal domain.

Bad idea if you're still currently playing maple and liked their fan page. Someone may receive your email just by clicking on your profile and checking the URL you know how it has the facebookDOTcom/-insertyouremailusername- when you click your profile. With this the phishers can send you by spamming different addresses such as @Gmail,@yahoo,@AOL, to make sure one of them is correct and even worse they can sit there and crack your pass change your info log on... So make sure you switch emails if you liked their fan page just a pre-caution. I'm not entirely sure that they would do this, but if I was one i would do this...
They try emails like that all the time. Honestly anyone should know it doesn't make sense, but when it starts talking about things like banning/deleting accounts, it's basically an attempt to scare you to the point that you throw reason out the window just long enough to give them what they need.

General rule of thumb to follow though is that if Nexon felt your account had activity that was suspicious enough to warrant a ban, they wouldn't be sending you an email telling you to try to appeal it. That would imply that they feel you're innocent before even speaking with you. And in that case they wouldn't have handed you a ban in the first place.
Suspicious activity on account/account lockings though are a different matter.

It's really easy to strip emails from the internet. So no it is most likely not a database leak on Nexon's parts.

I get these all the time warning me that my World of Warcraft account has been locked "for my protection" and to "click here" to reactivate.
And of course, I don't even have a WoW account.

They just broadcast these things out by the millions and hope they hit someone who actually does have a Maplestory (or WoW) account.
