Anime

What animes or mangas have a good storyline?

I really enjoy a good storyline, whether it comes to games, movies, tv shows, or any other media. But right now I'm looking for animes/mangas that have good storylines to them. I really enjoy TWGOK and Mirai Nikki, but it's quite rare that I find an anime that has a storyline and character development that I could get into. So, please recommend something to me.

Note: Try to keep away from action oriented animes, I don't really like them, or at least try to pick one that doesn't completely revolve around the fights (I guess you could call Mirai Nikki action oriented, but it doesn't revolve around fight scenes like some other animes out there). Also, I really like the comedy genre, so keep that in mind, but I don't mind straying outside of that.

@yumtoast154: I might check it out if I like the genre, and if I don't get interested within a few chapters or episodes I can always just drop it.

@Novagnome24: With that way of thinking (not that it's a bad thing), you may as well open up ANN/MaL's top 50 and watch them all; because if there's a chance you might like it, you might as well watch it, right?

@yumtoast154: A search engine is automated, it won't tell me its opinions on a series, it will only tell me that it exists and only what it is about. Besides, if I do use a search engine, it will really only lead me to more "recommendation" pages full of people recommending things to each other, which again raises the possibility of encountering people who barely watched enough anime to give out recommendations.

But still, even if I do encounter these anime "newbies", why should I discount their advice just because they don't watch enough anime to begin with? If they like a series, maybe there's a chance that I'll like it too. My friend tells me that Angel Beats! (I still have to check it out) is well-liked by many, but his friends who watch anime nonstop don't really seem to care for it. Sure they may know more about anime than most other people, but again, if there's a chance that I'll like it, why not check it out anyways?

@Novagnome24: Because a search engine does a better job of giving recommendations versus a group of people that have watched, what? 10 series? 20 series?

You're going to have to define 'opinionated' for me. If I want opinions, I just open up Google and type in "<__________> reviews/wiki."
We have anime recommendation threads every day.

Why can't you guys use Google? ANN search? MaL search? I mean, it gives the best un-biased recommendations based on the genres/types you search for. Even though these great resources exist, people continue to ask Basil, a community filled with people just getting into anime. Do people honestly think they'll get good recommendations from others who've watched a total of 20- series? Although there's that minority of Basil that will give solid feedback, chances are, OP will not pick up the series because those people are normally modest whilst fanboys/girls will rave all over their series they recommend (which means that their series will normally get picked up, rather than the good recommendation). I know I'm going to get lolhaet from this, but having the same thread every day for years is getting boring. Someone will argue "I want a personalized answer," (or "tl|dr" for those idiots that think they're witty) but search engines cater to every single one of your recommendation needs.
I don't really see the problem. What difference is there between asking a search engine and asking people? Aside from the fact that search engines aren't people? Besides, why does it bother you anyways? I actually want these to be opinionated.

you wont regret it, it is the best ive ever read.
THere isnt one of thoselong moments, neither does the story move fast.
The development of characters are entertaining, and action/storyline are very balanced.

Mm well I can't completely avoid fighting mangas, but these definetly does not have characters fighting for like 5-6 chapters (from what I remeber)

Bakuman: I love the story for this. It has building tension and character development, a bit of a romance, etc etc.
Tiger & Bunny: This is an anime. I thought it was a pretty refreshing anime i've watched in a while. It has old ideas, but how the story is told makes this anime pretty fun to watch. It also have comedy. (watchout for the fandom... seriously)
Deadman Wonderland: The blood and gore is awesome here. Lol OTL There are good amount of twist and turns in this manga, enough for me yeah lol.
Letter Bee: It's actually been quite a long while since I read this manga. But I indeed enjoyed this one enough to mention it here. Not much fighting, but the art is pretty wicked.
Kuragehime: Hahah, what about this one? This one is not like the ones above. This one is Josei. If you're not weird out cross-dressers and like stories with a happier ending, the anime is pretty good. Personally, I thought the anime ending was pretty meh, so I read the manga. It was sooo worth it.
Kaiji: Yes, the art... is very unique. But what I love about this one is the brain tease. Pass the... art, the story is a two thumbs up. Another story I enjoyed from the same aurthor is Tobaku Haouden Rei: Gyankihen and Buraiden Gai. Yes the all of them, the art is simply mind blowing.

I'm just gonna list names now, since it's like past midnight and i wanna sleep. But all the mangas are pretty intresting. Though they maybe lacking romance or anything like that.

Danshi koukousei no Nichijou - I died so many times laughing. I don't think there's much character development at all but I'm sure you can make an exception.
Monster - Even the dubs aren't too bad.
Toaru Majutsu no Index - I didn't finish because I'm a lazy butt.
Eden of the East - I think this was it. My boyfriend told me to watch "East of Eden" and when I googled it this came up. It also came up as mystery so it would make sense for him to suggest it. I only watched the 1st episode and it was...questionable.

I liked Mushi-shi as well :o

Usagi drop
Ef a tale memories/melodies (forgot which comes first)
Honey and clover (both seasons)
^^ I really recommend that you watch those
Ef a tale and Honey and clover are I guess 'romance' and usagi drop is... hard to explain, just go watch the pv for all of them

Nichijou (comedy)
This is one funny anime. Most episodes made me laugh till my sides hurt xD

Seirei no Moribito. Interesting story with lovely character development. It's got some fighting in it, but it's on the realistic side (no magical power ups & no technique screaming). I highly recommend watching this because it's really worth your time.

TWGOK (read the manga too), liked it.
Mirai Nikki (read the manga too), liked it.
Sora No Otoshimono (read the manga too), was mediocre.
Hayate No Gotoku (only the anime, currently watching it).
Keroro Gunso (only the anime), liked it.
While technically not an anime or a manga, I thought I should include that I played Katawa Shoujo too, and I really liked that
Quite a lot of other ones too, but those are the ones that I can remember off of the top of my head.

To watch/read list (some may go against what I want):
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
FLCL
Kaiji
Katanagatari
Sora no Otoshimono is probably my most hated manga.

I know, right? It's amazing how they made karuta, a card game on poetry, into something so epic. It actually made me (more) interested in the Japanese literature.

I have a high tolerance for almost any anime, so forgive me if it pretty much sucks.
Read or Die, there's not much fight scenes in the TV series, but the OVA pretty much has fighting half of it.
