Journey to Artistic Talent

Dearest Basil,

I have gone throughout my entire life without ever producing anything artistic. I would always see friends who had done amazing art work and feel forever jealous of there talent, yet most of them had beginnings not even close to what they can currently produce. It is a combination of this and myself moving into a new stage in my life, that i feel i should at least challenge myself an try to improve on my ability to draw and create.

I sat down for forty minutes looking at a skull, and attempted to draw it to the best of my ability.

This is the result of careful consideration and no previous artistic experience what so ever.

Please, offer me advice, suggestions on things i can draw, techniques to improve and constructive criticism, all will be appreciated as i attempt to improve .

Sincerely, Sarkos.

Start somewhere. Draw things you REALLY enjoy (are excited about)

Like anime? Like vintage drawings? Start with something. Then improve.
Your friends are able to produce works amazing compared to their first times cuz it's the years and years of practice and refining for that to happen.
Let me tell you a secret , it might look so holy/amazing to your eyes but can still look like derpy trash in their own view. That very essence pushes and give them the motivation to further improve and practice more.

You cannot go from zero to hero overnight. You have to understand that and just let it slowly take it's course .
Now about the part where you forced(?) yourself sitting down there 40minutes studying a skull. I strongly discourage you to do that. Unless you were actually enjoy it, then it's a totally different story.

From your short story you shared, i can tell you want to see immediate results. i don't really do that but i have 1 way to do it,
You can try tracing. Tracing from your favorite manga / character , anything you like. But bear in mind not to be too reliant on it.
Thats what i can comment here, till then , i'd leave you some advice :

1) Determination and perseverance
2) The urge to learn new things and strive for improvement
3) Practice .
I rather did enjoy it. I actually stopped after the most part because it was getting tedious, however i went back and finished some shading because i felt like it.

@Creeper: The personal reasoning behind this first task was to see if i was actually able to take a real thing and convert it into an image form with correct ratios. I feel my terrible memory limits me to what i can draw from memory. Being a very realistic person, i'd love to be able to sketch the things i see over the course of my travels rather then seek an imaginative input. My drawings (If i can learn how to draw) will become stories and scenes from my own life.

Keep in mind there's more to art than copying images.

I mean, you copied a skull onto a piece of paper. It looks very nice. Great. But, what's the meaning and what's the message? Does it symbolize anything significant to you?
