The Earth is 6,000 years old

A recently conducted poll concluded that 44% of Americans believe that the Earth is 6,000 years old. I want to know what Basil Market's thoughts on this are.
Not entirely sure about your idea that the US has the best post secondary education.... Simply googling 'best education in the world' gave me several links which results in US 4th in terms 'most educated country', 17th in another 'world education ranking', and even 46th in literacy rankings. If you're to talk about Universities, then UK's Cambridge Uni still comes 1st in terms of ranks...
http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2011-2012/top-400.html He was talking about secondary education. Reading is pretty useful. And of the top 100 colleges in the world, the US held more than half of them, considering their population only makes up 5% of the world, this is extremely disproportional.

And you can't say "UK's universities are the best because of Cambridge," there are primary schools in the US that are better than other country's schools (this thread is talking about primary school), that doesn't make the US have the best schooling system. And Cambridge isn't even the best school in the UK. The US has the best secondary schooling system.

Let each individual person believe what he/she wants. Let the atheists believe that the earth is billions of years old. Let the Christians and others believe this earth is not.

I really don't care what other people think. I'll just stick to my belief, and that's that. Why are there so many conflicts? If you love your religious view so much, then don't argue with others about it. Just stick to what you believe, and don't force your religion onto other people.

To atheists, I respect your view on life and such, and it should be respected by many others. Scientists have spent a great amount of time for research and carbon dating to prove that the earth is well over billions of years old. If that is what you believe, so be it.

To religious people, leave the atheists alone. I get that you want to prove that wrong about how the earth is only a couple thousand years old, but seriously? Debating about it all the time is going nowhere. Scientists will stick with their belief until the end. To them, there has been no sign of God, so let it be. I am a Christian, but I refuse to force my religion onto others, it's just downright disrespectful. Keep your faith, and let others be.
We also have community college, as do most countries.
>Implying that other countries don't have equally crappy universities.
Honestly, how is that even an argument.
That assumption also invalidates your analogy by the way.
"THE U.S. HAS BAD SCHOOLS, BUT I'M GOING TO PRETEND OTHER COUNTRIES DON'T"

How do most people come to the conclusion that Harvard is the best university int he U.S.
Rankings.
You....have no actual reading comprehension, do you? Did you not understand the analogy? I'll try again.

I never said other countries did not have bad colleges and universities, merely because of the nature of how the institutes are run here compared to other countries, as well as the size of the nation itself, we have far more. Thus, like a man throwing 100 darts at the board, we have more chances to get lucky. Saying the few best represent the whole though is dishonest. Are you keeping up now? It is not that other countries have bad ones, it is the sheer number of them. If you want it put another way, there is a greater percentage of universities in the uk that are quality then America. Thus, it is a little dishonest to look only at the list, see america has some on top and then make an assumption that by the very word choice you use, includes everything. And you did. You said America has the best. And that has been proven wrong as a direct claim (england has the best school), and wrong in the general sense (the volume of crap school not being taken into account when making the claim). Now, if you are done trying to strawman my argument and put words in my mouth, will you address my actual argument?

also, again, define best please. Rankings are based on who is measuring and depending the source, can vary wildly. A christian newspaper will have a different opinion on the best school compared to a scientific journal. Just saying "rankings" is a cop out. Rankings in what according to who?

Because our forefathers were religious, thus it stems from there, and no-one is stupid enough to make an issue out of it, because not only will it be a waste of time, but only more war will break out because of the year of some dead guys death.

All in all, who really cares?
We all came from somewhere, and we're all alive now, so make the most of it, as there are no guarantees in life, and since no-one here is dead, we don't know what happens in death, and anyone claiming to know is delusional.

An atheist, communist, liberal, Muslim homosexual lesbian ACLU lawyer professor and abortion doctor was teaching a class on Karl Marx.

"Before the class begins, you must get on your knees and worship Marx and accept that he was the most highly-evolved being the world has ever known, even greater than Jesus Christ!"

At this moment, a brave, patriotic, pro-life Navy SEAL champion who had served 1500 tours of duty and understood the necessity of war and fully supported all military decision made by the United States stood up and held up a rock.

"How old is this rock?"

The arrogant professor smirked quite Jewishly and smugly replied, "4.6 billion years, you stupid Christian".

"Wrong. It's been 6,000 years since God created it. If it was 4.6 billion years old and evolution, as you say, is real... then it should be an animal now!"

The professor was visibly shaken, and dropped his chalk and copy of Origin of the Species. He stormed out of the room crying those liberal crocodile tears.
The students applauded and all registered Republican that day and accepted Jesus as their lord and savior.

An eagle named "Small Government" flew into the room and perched atop the American Flag and shed a tear on the chalk.
The pledge of allegiance was read several times, and God himself showed up and enacted a flat tax rate across the country.

What now, atheists?

If the universe did not exist past 6,000 years ago, then light from anything farther than 6,000 light years cannot have reached us.
On the other hand, the farthest observed event/object in space is an estimated 13+ billion light years away.

I'd take science over young Earth creationism.

Im not athiest or anything .. i believe and love God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit but the earth is billions and trillions of years old and it can be proved because of the life forms tht used to live here.. we can now tell how old they r usin our sophisticated technology.. and dinosaurs lived bout million of years ago .. and its 2012 because its been 2012 years of Society and comunity.. basically 2012 years ago we didnt hav villages or cities or towns

And Society began when God sent Jesus to die for us
15/top 25 is nice, but you seem to mistake that as somehow indicative of the quality of post-secondary education in America as a whole. That my friend is a bit incorrect. We have a large number of tripe post-secondary schools, hell, on topic here, the christian fundamentalists post secondary is what is churning out the disinformation machine that is American Christian apologetic that promotes distrust of scientists as a whole, doubt about the age of the earth and outright denial of evolution.

America has post-secondary treated more like a business then any other country on the list, so of course some will excel in just the pursuit of profit that comes from excelling. However, it is kind of disingenuous to make a claim about America being "best" in post secondary education based on that alone, since the sheer volume of utter crap prevent it from being a justifiable claim. Thus, define "best" here, and if it IS just having the most in the top list, then just call it that instead...

America treats post-secondary as more of a business, and has a larger population, thus, far far more institutes.
To put this in an analogy lets say you have 2 people tossing darts at a board. The first tosses 5, gets a bullseye and the rest relatively fair on the board. The second tosses 100, hits everywhere around the bar, the other patrons and the board itself. He manages to get 2 bullseyes. Does that mean he is really "better"? Might want to rethink that one.
Although the US's primary education is horrible, it doesn't really matter how good it is. I can give a person a perfectly good explanation of Natural Selection, and Evolutionary Theory, yet they reject it because of their religious doctrine. It's not a matter of the quality of the education, it's a matter of the presence of religion. If religion didn't exist, that number would be 0%. It doesn't matter how crystal clear the explanation is, if the person doesn't have an open-mind.
