I feel so clueless

I was having my history class discussion in college, and it happened to be talking about all the Republican and Democrats issues, and auto insurance, medicare medicaid, liability insurance, minimum wage, financial crisis. And let me be honest with you, I nearly know nothing about these topics.

Now let me tell you a little about myself: I came to the U.S. about 4.5 years ago and the only thing I considered did "good" was maintaining a good GPA from my high school but it really meant nothing because I didn't really learn anything I just did it for sake of test, so I couldn't apply. Lately I started to hate myself for being very ignorant, now I don't know to what extent shall I try to conform to society, but I'm willing to give the best I can, because I don't want to be "mentally alone" or clueless anymore, I just wanna learn the basic things that happens around us, so it's like a common knowledge.

So if you have any tips on how to improve on this I'll great greatly appreciate that!~

Well, if I understand this correctly, you mean people in general just want things, and when they get the things they want or achieve to certain level, they just want it more.

So it could be related to knowledge as well, since there are infinite amount of knowledge that is coming up day by day, so there's no way to make oneself "complete" or "perfect", and I guess this is what the world is all about, keep on learning and bettering oneself. But of course, some knowledge could be trivial so it's wise to know the common knowledge or everyday stuff and then move on to the important stuff such as college major and pre-learn something in one's spare time about a future job.
Feel the same way, I should probably read the news
Okay, the thing about news is, I just read it for sake of reading it, but not really absorbing the information. It's probably trivial news that wouldn't retain in my memory.
You'd be surprised at how many people are just as ignorant as you, it's probably most of the country.

Your best bet is to just research this stuff yourself, look up each term one at a time and read-up on it, Wikipedia is a great tool.
Thanks for the tips, sir.
