Why is everyone on Basil a grammar freak?

Every time there is an argument on basil all you ever see is one of the people arguing talking about the other person's 'bad grammar'. All i ever see is them going back and forth on how much the other person is a 'child' and an 'idiot'. Imagine some guy walking around school correcting every single person on every single grammar mistake, and calling people idiots. That person wouldn't be very liked would he? I'm trying to enjoy a nice argument here, but it gets hard when all i ever see is the same stuff over and over and over and over and over!

Yes people, I learned IN SCHOOL that you have to capitalize i when you're speaking of yourself. I just didn't think there was a problem with typing i instead of I? o.o

usually, those who are losing to an argument points out the other person's grammar. or some people just don't have nothing to post and just want to post random things.

inb4 someone points out my capitalization.

oh, someone already said what i said in page 1 <3

Yes, yes I would. I would say "It's ___ not ___. But anyway (continues convo)"

Yeah, it's annoying I guess, but there are forum-goers who tend to think this way;
Grammar is important though. If someone cannot construct a proper argument, why should that argument be deemed worthy as a response? Yeah, I think I understand what you're trying to say, but if you can't say it properly, what's the point?
Incidentally, I think the other way around; if a message is able to convey a point, it really seems tedious and unnecessary to go out of my way to correct it. The conveyed message is the point, not the way it is phrased. The pursuit towards perfect grammar seems crazy to me; Language isn't a rigid construct to adhere to, but rather, a method of conveyance meant to be as flexible as the people who speak it. Rigid and pedantic languages fade and fall out of use, like Latin, while those new, simpler branches take the place of the stem.

I really don't care enough about phrasing or semantics, BUT I do ask that a message at least be remotely legible so that I can at least understand a degree of what you're trying to say. A period here or there... maybe even consider using complete sentences every once and a while... Nothing fancy, but something readable.

People on the internet tend to like to undermine each other to make themselves feel better.
I try not to do it but sometimes, it's so bad I wonder if they quit school in the middle of their childhood.
Maybe because some people are different than you and are perfectionists? Not everyone has to be carefree like you.
How is that in the least bit relevant? Just because someone is a "perfectionist" that doesn't mean you have to resort to correcting grammar in an argument completely unrelated to grammar. It just makes you look arrogant.

It's hard to take someone seriously when their spelling or grammar is absolutely terrible. If you're spelling and abbreviating something like a 4th grader with ADD texting with 1 finger you simply don't sound intelligent. If you can't take the time to at least make a good faith effort in writing in a somewhat intelligent manner then why should anyone take you seriously?

However, nitpicking every little mistake is just annoying and just makes the grammar nazi look like a tool. A tool whose loosing an argument.

I am quite confident that as long as you can understand the basic concept behind what an individual is saying, there is no need to go out of your way to point out their grammar mistakes, especially when it is irrelevant the the conversation.

Can't refute someone's arguments?
Correct their grammar. It'll no doubt make you look smart and educated and convince them you're right.

belittling and making a human feel inferior brings out anger.

when I argue, I do that, I try and get the other person mad for my own humor

Most of Basilmarket is just people who feel to correct people, and they think that this is a perfect image to others. When in reality, they look like idiots.

It's the internet, you are bound to find grammar problems throughout.

This. Everyone tries to be "mature" and yet, no one will EVER take you seriously if you can't even talk correctly.

Personally, I've so far spent more than 80% of my life in education, learning the English language for most of that time. You can be sure I'll be making the best use of the language possible. As far as correcting it goes, I personally just find it upsetting that people who have also been 'learning' (I use the term loosely) the language are unable to use it correctly. I support people correct others, but there comes a point when simply correcting it becomes an opportunity for people to assert some kind of dominance over others.
In short, correcting is good, being offensive about it is not.

Whenever two people argueing insult the other's grammar, I always think of Rules for Being a Disagreeable Companion. Copy and pasted.
If when you are out of Breath, one of the Company should seize the Opportunity of saying something; watch his Words, and, if possible, find somewhat either in his Sentiment or Expression, immediately to contradict and raise a Dispute upon. Rather than fail, criticise even his Grammar.
When they're desperate to make a childish comeback, it's the simplest choice to go.

Yeah, I agree. Grammar nazis are pretty annoying. Who cares if someone types "there" with the intention of using "their" or whatever it may be. You understand what they're trying to say, even if it's grammatically incorrect.

I dunno. I dislike it for various reasons.

For one, this is a forum vvhere most vvriting is free-form, open ended, and pretty much first draft. It's not expected to be perfect and flavvless. It just needs to be decently coherent.

It's also not a college essay, as stated it's just a forum post, so I don't knovv vvhy people go out their vvay to correct you over tiny things. I can understand if vvhat they say vvas completely unreadable then yea, go ahead and clean it up but other than that there's no need to make a useless comment. If I vvanted an english teacher, I'd go to the school vvriting center since I have to pay for it anyvvay.

It's especially annoying vvhen they correct you and are completely vvrong themselves. I had someone correct me the other day on a vvord I used correctly. He had the nerve to tell me to look it up, so I copy and pasted the definition to shovv him that I did use it right. They don't even give so much as an apology yet they vvill alvvays flaunt their vvriting prowess.

Because they can't think of anything better to say towards a person. That may be the only thing they find they can use to insult someone and so they use it. Either that or they have a superiority complex and think that everything is always grammatically correct and feel the need to tell others about their atrocious grammar.
