How do Clean Slate Scrolls Work?

I started my first voyage into scrolling and hit a snag when a scroll failed (surprise... surpise...). I intend to use the clean slates from either the Tempest Store or Hot Time to fix it, so I was wondering if I was left at a standstill. Currently, I have 3 slots remaining because the fourth one failed. I was wondering how Clean Slates decide which slot to fix. Does it fix the previous slot, meaning I have to stop scrolling for now to fix that fourth slot or does it detect any failed slot regardless of order?
It fixes any lost slots. As long as you have a slot used but not the (+x) effect besides the items name, it will restore the slot. Better yet, if you use a 50% golden hammer and it fails, you can still use a clean slate to restore that lost slot.
So I can continue scrolling now, and throw clean slates to fix the lost slot (and any other subsequent ones) afterwards?

So the failed hammer does pass, it just makes the slot as if it failed? Always wondered about that.
