Red is the protagonist from Yellow, who defeats Team Rocket, gets 8 badges(possibly more, though it's unknown), has a signature Pikachu similar to Ash, and became the champion after beating Green/Blue. Then he went into training on Mt. Silver. Red=The ultimate badass-ery in Pokemon.
Ash is based off Red, has a Pikachu like him, except his Pikachu seems to lose 99 levels every time he goes to a new region. He somehow also always get messed up by the same two team rocket grunts repeatedly over and over again. Ash=whiny kid.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: The character Red comes from the manga Pokemon Pocket Monsters with a completely different storyline. He owns a trouble-making clefairy, and the pokemon are actually able to speak the human language.

Fun fact: the manga was actually based on the game, and not the other way around.

The original game was released in February 27, 1996, while the manga was first published in
November, 1996. The english version only came to America about two years after the manga, which explains why Red is one of the options available when you first start the character (even though noone here read the manga).

The anime(1997) was based off the manga(nov 1996), which in turn was based off the original game (feb 1996).[/quote]

I just got learned.

"Red with his pokemon alone beat the evil organizations of team rocket.
Ash always falls into a pit.
Red earned trust from Mewtwo.
Ash got turned into stone.
Red became the Pokemon Master and stands on a heavy blizzard mountain for 3-5 years now just to wait for a trainer to come by..
Ash got nearly beat to a bellsprout and still can't travel alone.."

Ash is no where near as successful as Red is.
