Words Of Wisdom from a Former Mapler

Well... I'm going to post about several topics. Go ahead and start reading!

"12 Year-Olds are dumb!"
I've said this many times, and I'll say it again.
Age is just a number. All it is, is a number used for drinking, driving, smoking, gambling... etc.
The amount of maturity just depends on the person, as long as they're not some giggly, obnoxious 7-8 year old.
Anyone under 7 can't be considered developed, as 6 year olds and under are still learning their traits.

"omg i got hacked and lost like, 5 dollars worth of items!"
Unless you invested several years and it was a nostalgic game to you, the only thing you lost is virtual items.
Even if you were to sell them for real life money, you wouldn't get much. Don't be so materialistic. It's about the fun times you had. I personally lost 6 years and 450 dollars worth of items. I got annoyed at it for a while, then realized, "what's the point in it?" It's a game meant to waste time. In essence, all games are useless. FPS games can be debatable, as some soldiers use them for training... but that's a different story, and I can bet most of you aren't soldiers.

"My Duped Items got DELETED! Wow."
It was a gamble, and you took it. Think of it this way. You're now 30. You went to a Casino and gambled all your money, expecting to win.
You lost.
It's the same thing here; and with lower stakes. So it's no big deal. Plus, refer to the "got hacked" section back there.

Calling everything racist and making "that's what she said" jokes at nearly everything.
You're at the pinnacle of immaturity if you're doing this. Seriously. It's no big deal to make racist jokes as long as you say them jokingly and sparingly. "That's What She Said?" You can use that at any phrase. Most of the time, it's not even funny. Say it, and I repeat, sparingly.

Using terrible grammar and spelling, or speaking in different languages for whatever unruly reason.
Please, try to learn the English language. It's a useful skill, and really, nobody likes talking to someone who sounds like this.
"hablas espanol?"
Or this.
"amg cna i plz stey in ur jesturs map plsz?"
Or this.
"..."
So just try to learn a good bit of English. Unless you have a learning disability or just came to Canada or America, you have no excuse.

This is kind of a rant thread, and kind of a post to cheer people up. I got bored and decided to type it out. Post your opinions below.
Note: The first section was mostly because I'm 12 years old and I'm annoyed by all the arrogance people throw towards 12 year olds.

I see all kinds of ignorance in this thread.

Maybe its because you ARE 12 that you feel this way. Not to be disrespectful, but this game isn't even meant for people as young as you.
Show me proof that this child-like game isn't for children and I'll give you my kudos.

@Petizh: mmmmkay, I read it as "12 year olds ARE dumb, but... <insert what he said here>" Which was contradictory to me

@Ayade: This is Global Maplestory, not Spanish Maplestory or whatever you want to name it. People should at least be able to know a few lines of the global language (English) if they want to play this game.
Talking in their own language with their friends and guild is okay, but talking with strangers is not. They should know a little English because this GMS.

I already made a response about that topic. I have no need to respond to you as I already made my final response to others about it.

@Harman2: I understand them and laugh at them - but I know someone who will literally say them after ANY sentence or word, even if it doesn't make sense.
"Hi."
"That's what she said."
"No, it's not."
"That's what she said."
It was okay the first day, but when he just kept going forever, it got really annoying. It's like someone mimicking everything you did for a whole week.

@makingmonie: I was in a "rant" mood and was really tired. Everyone thinks I think "highly" of myself, but it's that I think lowly of everyone, including me. Nearly everyone on Basil is insignificant, (me included,) and we're all equal. (If I sound religious, I'm not. I'm atheist. I'm not an equalist either. Just saying.)
I also apologized about the foreigner thing. I wasn't paying attention, I just spewed that thing out in 5 minutes at 100 WPM and posted it without reading it over.

The way you worded things I was thinking wow he is mature for a twelve year old. And then when you respond to arguments and I realized the actual content of this is a rant of a more rude nature... it killed your level of maturity. You are mature don't get me wrong, but I think you're more smart and knowledgeable than actually mature or else you wouldn't be so ignorant of foreigners and unable to handle jokes (and i know you said you think people should just use them sparingly but part of being mature is able to handle people saying annoying things and looking past it). I understand most foreigners on maple tend to be rude and don't like communicating but it makes you sound bad when you put it like that (that meaning your paragraph in your original post). You also think pretty highly of yourself huh? No offense intended but being honest, do you think of yourself as more of an adult than most other pre-teens and even teenagers? Hope you don't take this the wrong way as I know it's hard to tell a person's tone online sometimes so I might just be taking your thoughts harsher than you're meaning them.

I find it funny at some of the people arguing about the age stuff. Even if you see a "younger player" they may still be as mature as some adults. (ex: I once saw a 4th grader that sounded like he could have already finished high school)
Ah well, I didn't find it "offensive," really, just not true in the way you phrased what you said. Especially because I had just previously read you saying that maturity level depends on the individual, assuming you meant that it doesn't just disclude age. Something I have learned about people is that rudeness transcends all age/sex/language barriers; rude and impolite people exist everywhere. What I was really trying to say was, surely you have had people treat you rudely who speak English in Maple, too. I do agree, though, that people who play this game should make an effort to learn English or at least enough to understand what is going on and at least communicate efficiently in parties. I don't expect anyone to learn Spanish, because even if this game is "global," it is presented to us in English.

It's just the way you were responding and phrased what you said were reminiscent of the kind of rudeness that I heard when Brasil MS came out. If I was speaking Spanish in all-chat, people would tell us to go away because we now had our own version, mind you that Brasil doesn't even speak Spanish.

I had a few, but I was the most active on samidare or Kancho. I quit playing in Broa three or four years ago, I think.
I see I was remembering different IGNs and I remember a bishop and BM more specifically.
That's why I don't tell people I'm 12 after I've had a little chat with them.

Once I do tell them I'm 12, they're all like, "Wow, you are so mature for your age."

My reply: "I get that a lot."
Kudos to you. Whoa. A rare species; another mature 12 year-old.
By the way, that's the exact same response as mine.
While I can agree with or at least see your viewpoint on most of what you touch on, your stance on foreigners or, as you say, people who ask "hablas espanol?" that nobody likes is something I really wouldn't consider wisdom.
I was one of those foreigners who spoke pretty poor English when Maple first came out, and I went around asking "hablas espanol?" so that I could find people to communicate with in this multiplayer game. Whether GMS is meant for the rest of the globe that doesn't have a localized version or is meant to cater to North America, it would and will contain people who do not predominately speak English.
And on the point of, "I'm not generalizing. I'm stating the truth." about people who speak Spanish being deliberately rude to you or other English-speakers, possibly because you don't speak Spanish, I would like to say that is completely wrong. You say, "When two people that both know Spanish meet, it's fine." Spanish is my first language and I speak it fluently; I have a fairly good grasp on English as well. I am friends with many people who speak only English and many who speak only Spanish in Maple. However, I have also been treated just as rudely as people who speak only English have been treated by Spanish-only-speakers. When I played in Broa I was actually harassed by members of a guild from my country because I was in an English-speaking guild.
The rudeness or "troll-ish" nature of apparently 40% of us has nothing to do with the language we speak or the barrier created by the difference. While they can use lack of understanding as an excuse, it's obvious when a person is deliberately being rude. You may want to take some of your own advice on that part: The amount of maturity just depends on the person.
What was your ign for broa? I think I know you.
I think it's my duty to do this. Or more accurately I have nothing better to do.

First you say "age is just a number" then you bag on people below 9 years old. Age isn't JUST a number, but it also isn't as important as people make it out to be. Maturity is subjective. I was mature when I was 8, but that same mature behavior is probably immature to me right now(23). It doesn't help that young people are often more immature, but by no means is an older person mature.

Sentimental value > whatever you spend on this game. Even if you spend 0 dollars, it hurts to lose everything you've worked for. Time is precious as well, not just money. It's a game, but it means something more when you put enough time in it. Anything does. To dismiss that is just, wrong.

"My Duped Items got DELETED! Wow."
It was a gamble, and you took it. Think of it this way. You're now 30. You went to a Casino and gambled all your money, expecting to win.
You lost.
It's the same thing here; and with lower stakes. So it's no big deal.

Agreed, though I prefer a "You lost, DEAL WITH IT" tone myself.

Other two are kind of off topic, but I mostly agree with them.

....Wait a minute! I didn't get to verbally rip into you at all!
I included the "nostalgic" part and yes, it was nostalgic for me, but all the moments you experienced were experienced. Not lost or forgotten, it's still remembered in your memory. It still happened. It's not gone, so you can't call it "lost." Games are meant to waste time. You play games knowing it's a game, and you won't legitimately gain anything. Time is more important when you're an adult than as a child. As a child, you have plenty of time to waste. As an adult, you're busy with jobs or college/university. By no means is an older person more mature, but they mostly are. Your opinion on being mature at 9 was from your point of view at 9. You won't remember a lot of the immature things you did. Calling yourself mature is also a piece of being immature in many different wordings.

@gimliofdurin: I have no idea what you mean by that, honestly. Yeah. I'm thick-headed.
@Ayade: I'm tired of responding to your repeated argument. If you're not gonna post new arguments, don't post it.
@Mystelteinn: Yeah. I'm a bit tired and groggy. I typed up the thread haphazardly in about 5 minutes, so don't blame me. If there are any spelling or grammar mistakes that seem hypocritical, it's because I typed it at around 100 WPM.
@metaghost4: I can't respond to that, as I'm tired and not an expert in that area. (Or any, for that matter.)

Then it clearly isn't a language problem, it's an attitude problem. Considering the number of complaints I've heard about fellow English speakers ignoring CC requests, it's obvious that inconsiderate people are confined to no language group. Regard your own OP:
Using terrible grammar and spelling, or speaking in different languages
Putting non-English languages with "terrible grammar and spelling" -- the latter being the kind of prescriptivist snobbery that any trained linguist can see through, anyway.
for whatever unruly reason
Equating multilingualism with "unruliness" -- which, for those not in the know, means misbehavior and disorderliness.
nobody likes talking to someone who sounds like this.
"hablas espanol?"
Absolute statement which 1) assumes that Spanish speakers are people that "nobody likes talking to" and 2) makes it plain that you find Spanish unpleasant even if it's just someone asking if you're a fellow hispanohablante.
Unless you have a learning disability or just came to Canada or America, you have no excuse.
Assuming that everyone in GMS is a resident of Canada or America, and furthermore that all such residents should and must be monolingual anglophones.

Explanation courtesy of my unwillingness to talk down to younger folks.

Global = International.

International language for communications, diplomacy, etc. is english.

Get over it.

Besides, the game is in english. If it was intended for spanish users, it would be in spanish, don't you think?

Not being hateful towards people speaking other languages, but if you're gonna play a game which has english (or tagged GLOBAL//INTERNATIONAL) as it's base language, the least you could do is be able to muster a few words/sentences.

Note : I'm not a native english speaker, and i'm not a grammar nazi, nor do i care about it. You understood me, and that was the point.

Xenophobic? I'm not scared or hateful towards them. It's that more than half of them are speaking through Google Translate or just don't even know anything except how to say "I don't speak English" in "their" language.
And then the other 40% are troll-ish foreigners that possibly hate English-speakers for being "xenophobic" as you would say.

I didn't. 7-8 year olds are very rarely mature. Ever. If they are, they wouldn't be on MapleStory anyway. They'd be doing something else. (e.g Chess, Soccer, etc.) If you're talking about "12 Year-Olds are dumb!" then it's in quotations and I meant that to quote others.
