I've been thinking about joining the music department for this upcoming school year in high school. I really want to play the cello but this will be the first time ill ever be touching it and im really scared about if i will be able to keep up with my classmates. In other words, is the cello a hard instrument to learn/play? I've played the flute in middle school for a year and i feel like i learned pretty quickly js. ty in advance

idk about the cello but if you really want to join i say go for it. you are there to learn to play anyway, right? i don't think anyone will care if it takes you a while to get the hang of it either, which it probably will. gl

I don't think you'll enjoy it, if you came from the flute. Flute is very melodic. Cello virtually never gets the melody. Also, Violin is fairly compatible with Flute sheet music, if that means anything.

I'm a Violin player so I'm biased.

tbh trying any instrument for the first time in a school orchestra is never a good idea. you're there to learn how to play together, not individually. the teacher won't have time to teach you one on one. i've played in school orchestras before and it always ended up that the people that wanted to play violin for the first time would fall way behind.

If its a class for beginners then why not, every will be on your same shoes.

I never played the cello but it is pretty quiet, I couldn't even hear it when I was in my jazz band class. Though I don't think I have developed my that hearing yet.

Don't be discouraged about playing the Cello just because it may be difficult to learn.
Are you genuinely interested in learning how to play the Cello? I don't advise joining the school orchestra when you've never even touched the instrument before. You should talk to whoever is the head of your music department to see what they say.

Are you sure your cello player wasn't just pretending?

Cello is honestly not a hard instrument to learn. I just found it hard to get motivated to actually play pieces and learn it a lot.
-5 years percussion, AMuS level piano, 2 years cello instrumentalist.

In my school, we had an orchestra class and an orchestra that actually performed. The orchestra class had a beginner level (where people who were new or were at a really basic level could join) and then a more advanced class (most people from the performing orchestra were from this class). If your school has a beginner level class then I would recommend joining and trying it out first. If you're willing to practice outside of class, you should be fine.

Lol could of sworn too.
But our teacher has good ears so he knew when someone wasn't playing.
