Mobile version of basilmarket questions:

IMPORTANT NOTICE: I won't share this application because of multiple reasons wich I won't state! With that said, this thread is not the usual [REQUEST] insert_request_here-thread. I made this in order to get answer on some important questions and possibly some feedback.

[header]Why?[/header]
Me, and another basiler have been discussing a mobile version of basil for a while and my friend even said that she got a positive response from Mr.B when she/he asked. That means that this might be a good future suggestion.

[header]How?[/header]
It would be easiest if Mr.B made a mobile version but I've taken the time to create a demo.

The application have a backend written in PHP (using cURL) and the jQueryframework (free to use) is used for the UI.

[header]Topic/questions:[/header]
What I want you to discuss/answer is the following:
[*] Is this legal? (non-prophit ofc.)
[*] Is it useful?
[*] Does it look good?
[*] Other comments or thoughts?

[header]Additional questions:[/header]
[*] Would it be OK if the forum topics only updated every 60 seconds if it would speed up the browsing
[*] Tips on the "app-button" design? current one

@PerfectSlice: Haha... hopefully it will please you.

@malapo: I'll look into the meebo thing.

UPDATE:
Working on the forum part, would it be OK if the forum topics only updated every 60 seconds if it would speed up the browsing?

Great idea, but tell me....in the end, will this be run on a server by you, or will Basilmarket itself host it? I think many people with me would prefer the latter (account information passing another server is not a safe feeling).

@timesilkk:
Yes and no. The first time may be slower because your browser have to cache the javascripts but after that a pageload is around 3 times smaller on my mobile version. (~60kb for a chached page on basil compared to ~20kb on a cached page on the mobile version)

@PerfectSlice:
Because I use jQuerymobile it will work on multiple browsers, android included. A list of supported platforms/browsers can be found here: http://jquerymobile.com/gbs/

I've just used my iPhone to test it on.

@Jake305:
Thanks for the good feedback.

Btw, listings can be useful for some users.

Is this legal? (non-prophit ofc.): that, I don't know the answer to. sorry.
Is it useful?: to me, this would be incredibly useful. going on the pc version basil on my iPod is just a hassle. this would make lurking so much easier, and probably get me back into basiling again.
Does it look good?: I love how it looks. the well-organized, simple layout makes for a happy me.
Other comments or thoughts?: love it. keep up the great work.

and @perfectslice: ahah, quite the opposite in my area. I was at the dentist yesterday, and the waiting room was packed with people on their iPhones. I haven't seen that many Android users here -- yet.

@Plusle4eva:
1. Same speed
2. No, it will not reload. Maybe I should implement a auto-snipe function?
3. It will be the same

@moonpanda:
Obviously you won't benefit anything from this then, I'm sure other basilers will though.

:O I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER IF THIS HAPPENS.

• Will loading be slower or faster with this?

• Would there be an auto-reload option for auctions? I know the pain of being in a close auction, only to lose because of the pain of reloading the page =='

• I use an iPhone, so the keyboard would take up 80% of my screen. Will this work around that, or does it work like the normal webpage?

I approve this holy sausage. I would like a mobile version of basily. It would be handful. Also I notice one screenshot you posted has a PM from me. Very nice.
I figure if MrBasil gets involved with this, he can supply his own text-based ads. That way, it's a win-win for both sides (Faster loading times with text than images, ads for MrB.)
The best would be to integrate it with the site but I do agree with you there. It's the best option for both parts.
I'm not sure about how all the parts of the site work, but regarding #2, can you log out properly? I know the Log Out link gives a unique ID and was wondering if that affected this at all.
You can log out in 2 ways:

1. by clicking on the logout button (it should unset the session, I've tested that alot)
2. by logging on basil, that will make the stored session useless.
Pretty much, yeah. I only have 2 concerns, you listed one.

1. the ads
2. the site needs your info (basilID and pass), however, they are not stored. Only the session is stored and the stored session is useless if you log in to basilmarket "as usual".
I figure if MrBasil gets involved with this, he can supply his own text-based ads. Thanks!
Is this legal? My guess is yes. You're not stealing Basil's layout, nor making a duplicate like Vusys has. Afaict you're simply accessing the site via a different route rather than your standard www.basilmarket.com, yes?

Does it look good? It looks very Apple App-ish, but I'm guessing that lack of colorfulness and prettiness = faster loading times = good.
I do need to load the page on the server so it's (EDIT -&gt not faster than browsing as usual.
Other comments or thoughts? I'd like to see what this thread looks like on the mobile version. Also, are ads shown? (B-Meister might not like it taking away from potential ad clicks, but then again, if he made a m.basilmarket.com, he should program his own ads in.)
Nope, ads are not shown. Would increase loading time.
Yes.

I'd say it's useful to the people who wish to check Basil between classes or on the bus or whatever. A friend let me Basil on her I-phone clone and it was a huge pain in the proverbial neck. ><* My phone is from 2006, so I normally Basil using a laptop. We should find out how much of Basil regularly Basils using a phone, blackberry, you name it, to see if it's something that should be implemented. (/open door) Considering the influx of those things it could be worth looking into.
*strokes Sony Ericsson ki300* Don't worry, baby. I only use phones for calling or texting people and as alarm clocks.

@Pavchka Good point, I'd like to see some stats about just how many people visit from a mobile platform!

@metaghost3:
Uhm...
1. Facebooks server(s) > my comp
2. I'm not that familiar with IMAP ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAP & http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.imap.php )

(that's 2 of the reasons that popped up in my head but I agree with you, it would be good if I could send push notifications)
Can you make the new mail message, quote button, and auction alert into push notifications? That would be so friggin epic.
I don't think that's possible for the server because that would require the server to constantly send (and parse) request to basilmarket for every single online user.

I don't know how good cURL is when it comes to multiple requests but what I wrote above is my assumption. I can't say for sure because I haven't tested it.
• no idea, sorry D:
• I can imagine many people beyond satisfied, with me included!
• the colors r plain but that can change. The actual layout is simple and its very easy to look for something, with categories seperated. (some poeple might think it's Too simple, but it does work)
• other: By mobile version, do you mean app or mobile site?
-assuming it's an app: what will be notified (mail, auctions, replies, chat, etc.)?
-will we be able to submit pictures? (can't be done on the desktop website on a mobile device)(artwork and avatar update)
- will the basil IM work on this? (I will love u long time if this is added!)
- looks good! I this were to go live I'd be one of the first to download. Good luck!
[*] There is, as I mentioned earlier, multiple themes. I just choosed one I liked.
[*] It's not an app, it's a mobile version wich means no downloads, platform independent etc.
[*] Haven't thought of it, I'd say that it may be possible.
[*] I doubt that, the quote button will work though.
[*] No download needed...

@moonpanda:
Why do you need facebook on your phone?

Some users go on basil for chatting and discussing stuff that's not related to maple. Also, browsing basil on your phone is pretty inconvenient.

@IamnotTod:
Thanks!

(there is other themes, link in my previous post)

Twitter is not the same thing as basil. Twitter accually have a API: http://dev.twitter.com

@Mrkikyoass:
Probably, thanks for the comment!

I guess it's alright based since you know for twitter there are so many twitter version in the app store and it's legal. So I'm assuming it's legal if you coded it.
• yeah, a mobile version would be useful. I'm on basil with my iPhone all the time
• It looks good easy to navigate. it looks kind of plain though but I guess it's the demo
Plain in a good or a bad way?

A mobile version is supposed to be plain, if you wan't the full experience I think that just using the comp is better...
• would BIM work on it? You can go on meebo.com on your iPhone but it'd be nice if it was combined.
I don't really know, haven't tested that.

The quote(d) buttom on the BIM bar is easy to add if it's requested...
I would hope that if an application is made for the iPhone, that one would be made for the Android Market also.
This is not an app, it's a mobile version that I've made. That means that it can run on a big number of devices, you can find a list of supported mobile devices here: http://jquerymobile.com/gbs/
It's great, but my only problem is that it doesn't look enough like Basil with its' light grey background and teal boxes.

I do go on Basilmarket sometimes on my iPod touch, mainly for forums. The color scheme looks bland, but it looks like it works.
There are multiple themes available, you can look at a few examples here: http://jquerymobile.com/demos/1.0a3/ go to API->Theme framework
BTW, what would the forum tab look like? I don't see the picture for that on there. Would it be cluttered? Would there be an intermediate menu for general, chat, class, etc?
I haven't completed the forum section of the application yet. I have yet to decice how to structure it but I know for sure that posting will work seeing as I've managed to create scraps with it.

I'm just wondering if it's olay to fetch data from another website like this.
• Other comments or thoughts? You should get some specific response from Mr. B if he will ever implement a mobile version of the site, if so, great, if not, you're just wasting your time.
Well, it works pretty well for me atm and I'm just using my crappy comp as a test server. No noticable change in pageload etc.

If it's now welcome I can just use it for myself...

• Is this legal? : Not sure.
• Is it useful? : Yes, it will be VERY useful.
• Does it look good? : Well, the color choice is certainly better than Mr. B's, but it could have a bit more brighter colors. Perhaps giving the user power to choose a theme could fix this.
