Is drawing/animating a 5-10min scene of MapleStory illegal?

I really need to know.
I'm about to start working on a piece that will be anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes long.
However, it will be based off of MapleStory characters [not Nexon's characters per se but my/friends characters] and MapleStory monsters.
I will and animate all of this to my liking, yet it's basis is from Nexon/whothehelleverelsehelped's ideas.

I am not doing this for profit. I just like testing my abilities and seeing how people react to them.
Would this action be illegal and or can I be sued for it?

And when I say animation, I mean like how 'Anime's look. Not animating pixel crap. Think of Naruto or w/e you watch.

Thanks.

No, but just at least mention them in the credits and you'll be fine.

that's a link to some basic guidelines about the fair-use doctrine under the creative commons laws and blah blah blah

As long as you don't steer away potential marketshare (from nexon)/get a profit (advertisement, etc), I do not think that you will be in any trouble.[/quote]

Thanks.
