Could someone explain this to me please?
Hey basil! I have a paper due tomorrow and the directions for it are "Write a narrative from a character's perspective, conveying the desires or ambitions that motivate the character's behavior." It sounds simple, but I just don't get it. I've asked my friends but it still doesn't make sense to me.

First person: I could feel my back tear when I woke this morning with a bloody nose. I wiped at it with my hand and sat on the edge of the bed for a while. My bedroom shook and my bathroom light bulb popped as the train passed just over my apartment. I sighed, clutching my head in my hands as the world reverberated. It kept going. A ten car train. I started to slouch, felt my back ripping again and sat up. Reached for my drawer as everything around me trembled. Pulled out the cotton cloth, still damp with that sweet drug; pressed it to my nose -- inhaled. The world quieted.
This excerpt expresses a desire to escape an unpleasant life racked with both internal and external problems. The protagonist has a clear drug addiction (as seen with the cloth inhaling bits, and perhaps even the bleeding nose); he has a physically intense job (as seen from his sore back), and his living conditions are terrible (he resides under a train station). "The world quieted" expresses a clear desire to leave all of that behind somehow. Note that this is accomplished without the characters explicitly saying "I WANT OUT OF MY UNPLEASANT SITUATION," or "I AM ADDICTED TO DRUGS." It's shown, not told.
If you do something like this, you'll probably get an A.
