I personally prefer OP for it's serious, sad, and relatable moments and it's,"it's about to go down" moments. DBZ i respect because it was an inspiration to a lot of the shounen animes/manga including OP, but I still prefer OP.

I prefer dbz because I had more memorable moments with it, and I think it has more lovable characters.

I prefer One Piece, since for DBZ it feels like they had a story that wrapped up at the end of Dragonball, then just continued it because it was popular. After the arcs the characters just kind of sit around or train until the next crisis happens, whereas One Piece keeps up the momentum with the whole sailing from island to island thing. Also One Piece's world feels more thought out.

Then again, this could all be because I didn't really grow up with DBZ, like I have fond memories of Dragonball, my siblings and I would save up money to buy the DVDs as kids and watch the episodes together, but we never got to DBZ and in fact we never even finished Dragonball. One Piece on the other hand, I watched over the course of my Sophomore year of college, so it's fresher in my mind.

Both shows have their merits and detriments, I like DBZ's fusion thing and One Piece's length and pacing are huge turnoffs, but I'd still choose One Piece over any of the other long-running Shounens.

+1 I don't have a preference of one over the other, the only negative things I have to say about either is that One Piece can run very long during certain parts of the story; the most obvious and lengthy so far is the DressRosa arc; only time will tell if they keep doing that; I really hope they don't as that was quite a bit too long and unnecessarily drawn out.

So I guess I would probably rate DBZ a little higher just for being more consistent instead of constantly making longer and longer arcs; but I still watch both from time to time (i binge on anime rather than 1 or 2 episodes per week)

@tyrantblade: The dressrosa arc is particularly infuriating because half the crew just leaves the island halfway through the arc. Apparently as a result of this, they didn't appear in the manga for nearly 2 years. Like c'mon One Piece guy, that's when you've got to realize that your arc's going on too long.
At the same time though, DBZ is infamous for its lengthy, drawn-out fights that usually end with one guy screaming louder.

@ecarina: DBZ arcs are still nowhere near as long as the OP DressRosa Arc, which I'm hoping is an exception and not gonna become a rule.

I grew up on DBZ in the late 90s and early 2000s so I was about the same age as Gohan and could relate to him better than any protagonist from any other anime series. I felt a sort of connection to DBZ more than anything else, as if I were actually in it. Every day after I'd come from elementary school I'd turn on the television and watch Dragon Ball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Gundam Wing on Toonami. I only ever enjoyed watching anime, and out of everything I've ever watched, Dragon Ball has always held a special connection that no other series so far has ever done.
