They say that for many centuries inhabited the Valley of Anahuac Aztec,
famous conquerors and warriors. Their emperor had a daughter whose beauty was Ixtaccíhuatl
legendary. When the princess reached marriageable age, his father said:
- I hope you marry an Aztec prince, my daughter.
The princess tried to please his father and long sought a prince among the
Aztec noble families. But none caught his attention.
One day the prince chichimeca, Popocatepetl, came to visit Tenochtitlan.
The princess had gone out on his bunk and by chance met the prince in a
narrow street. When they saw each other two fell madly in love.
When he got home, Popocatépetl wrote a letter to the emperor with a plea
frank and simple - I want to marry your daughter.
Unfortunately, the emperor was furious and tried to forget Ixtaccíhuatl
her suitor.
But was unsuccessful. Ixtaccíhuatl insisted on marrying Popocatepetl. Defeated at last, the
Emperor wrote to the Prince saying that he agreed with the marriage but only
one condition. The Prince and his tribe had to support the emperor in the war against their
enemies. In fact the emperor wanted the prince died in battle. At time
fiercest of the battle, the Aztecs left the prince and his warriors. But these
fought with great courage and defeated the enemy. Meanwhile in Tenochtitlan, the
Emperor told the princess that Popocatepetl was dead. Then he sent word to
Popocatépetl the princess had died of sadness.
Popocatepetl not accept the bad news. Secretly returned to Tenochtitlan, where he entered
in the palace and met with Ixtaccíhuatl. The two escaped but from that day the emperor
refused to see them. For him, the princess was dead.
The two lovers fled to a place not far from the Aztec capital and built a
humble home. Several years passed and the princess fell ill. Despite the efforts inexhaustible
Popocatépetl, she died. At the time of his death came an earthquake, and amid the
emerged two volcanic upheaval across the valley. Obeying a voice came from
heaven, Popocatepetl took his beloved to the top of one of the volcanoes and placed in a
flower bed was prepared for it. And there he stayed to watch her for centuries.
Since then the two volcanoes watch over the valley of Anahuac, where the City
Mexico. The white snow Ixtaccíhuatl's name, meaning 'white star'. And
the plume coming out from time to time the crater of Popo explains behalf, which means
'Smoking mountain'.
