Alright, so my math teacher was looking up riddles and puzzles when he stumbled onto this one: 2=1
At first I didn't believe him till he wrote and all down, it actually make sense if you take it step by step.
a = b Suppose a=1 and b=1
a+a = a+b Add 'a' to both sides
2a = a+b a+a=2a (1+1=2*a)
2a-2b = a+b-2b Subtract 2b from both sides
2(a-b) = a+b-2b 2a-2b = 2(a-b)
2(a-b) = a-b b-2b = -b (1-2=-1)
2 = 1 Divide both sides by a-b

Now this statement is FALSE, I would have you post your comments about why YOU think it's wrong but you have the internet as a tool so what's the use?
I will save you the time from looking it up and tell you why it's wrong.
Notice the very last step: Divide both sides by a-b
This is impossible when a and b are converted into numbers: Divide both sides by 1-1
You should know already that it is impossible to divide any number by 0.
Since this is algebra it is correct and incorrect at the same time, just depends on your point of view I guess...

a=b
a=1
b=1
1=1.

QFT now shush, this is the PROPER answer.

I already posted why that "proof" was wrong. For any two numbers x and y, sqrt(xy) = sqrt(x)sqrt(y) is only true is x and y are positive real numbers. -1 is not positive, thus making that statement false.

I was just explaining why that proof was wrong. He knew it was wrong because it was proving that 2=0. It's one of those invalid proofs like the one in the OP...he was testing out Basil's math prowess. xD I was just answering. Chill. =P

Why would you have two different variables represent the same number? And if you plugged it in, assuming that you already knew the values of the variables, they'd be equal. Interesting, it actually turns math upside down.

Huh? That proof in the OP is mathematically correct except for the 2nd to last step. Everything else is perfectly legal... o_o

Check your order of operations in the second to last step there, bud.

the second step is stupid. you would NEVER ADD a number to both sides

CrayonScribble: A better proof would be prove: a^3 + b^3 =/= c^3 if a,b,c are intergers.

lol fermats last theorem, that took like 400 years to solve...

@qqtan36 "the second step is stupid. you would NEVER ADD a number to both side"

Have you never solved a quadratic equation?
x^2 - x - 2 = 0
(x - 2)(x + 1) = 0
then take (x - 2) = 0
and add 2 to each side
x = 2
