Compiled PvP Tips

Ice / Lightning Arch Mage Forum Talk about Ice/Lightning Wizard, Mage and Arch Mage

Added to the guide. Still taking tips though.

As requested here, I'm going to attempt to compile PvP tips for fellow I/Ls to have at their disposal. If you have a suggestion for training, post here. If you have some other suggestion for the guide, go post on the suggestion thread.

Once I have decided that this list is complete enough, it will be added to the main guide and made prettier.

If you're going to post advice, please type in this format:

Level Range (30+, 70+, etc):
Mode (Any combination of Team, FFA, Ice Knight):
Class(es) effective against (if applicable):
Strategy:

Rookie (30+)

  • Make sure you can equip your weapon without relying on potential stats.
  • In a 1v1 situation, teleport around your opponent to remain more difficult to hit. Works best with classes that have low mobility.
  • Take advantage of debuffing skills like Slow.
  • Pick up the attack boosts (the bubble with the fist shape in it) as often as you can.
  • Take advantage of your AoEs' vertical range. Try attacking from above or below if possible and avoid taking hits from the classes without one.
  • Watch out for a Battle Mage's Dark Chains. They'll drag you into range and possibly stun you if you're not careful.
  • If everyone in the whole PvP match goes to one platform and stays there without running away when they have low hp, everyone will get maximum experience points.

Gladiator (70+)

  • Make sure you can equip your weapon without relying on potential stats.
  • Don't bother with Teleport Mastery. Every time you teleport with it on it will show the animation and thus increase the delay between teleports. Your ability to move around easily is more important than the negligible damage and stun rate.
  • In a 1v1 situation, teleport around your opponent to remain more difficult to hit. Works best with classes that have low mobility.
  • Keep Thunderbolt available for use on your hotkeys, Ice Strike will not replace it since it has a cooldown.
  • Take advantage of debuffing skills like Slow and Seal, use them in conjunction so that when you Seal someone they're unable to run because they've been Slowed too.
  • Pick up the attack boosts (the bubble with the fist shape in it) as often as you can.
  • Use Ice Strike on crowds as often as you can. Don't waste your use though, there's a cooldown!
  • Take advantage of your AoEs' vertical range. Try attacking from above or below if possible and avoid taking hits from the classes without one.
  • Watch out for a Battle Mage's Dark Chains. They'll drag you into range and possibly stun you if you're not careful.
  • Beware of Magic Crash...
  • If everyone in the whole PvP match goes to one platform and stays there without running away when they have low hp, everyone will get maximum experience points.
  • Watch out for a Priest's Doom and Dispel.

Veteran (120+)

  • Make sure you can equip your weapon without relying on potential stats.
  • Don't bother with Teleport Mastery. Every time you teleport with it on it will show the animation and thus increase the delay between teleports. Your ability to move around easily is more important than the negligible damage and stun rate.
  • In a 1v1 situation, teleport around your opponent to remain more difficult to hit. Works best with classes that have low mobility.
  • When using Blizzard, try not to use it in the middle of a crowd: you're completely vulnerable while it's casting.
  • Charge Big Bang while on the invincible platform, jump down and let it loose in a crowd.
  • Take advantage of debuffing skills like Slow and Seal, use them in conjunction so that when you Seal someone they're unable to run because they've been Slowed too.
  • Pick up the attack boosts (the bubble with the fist shape in it) as often as you can.

  • Take advantage of your AoEs' vertical range. Try attacking from above or below if possible and avoid taking hits from the classes without one.
  • Stay away from Battle Mages using Tornado Spin. Don't even try to attack them or get near.
  • Watch out for a Battle Mage's Dark Chains. They'll drag you into range and possibly stun you if you're not careful.
  • If you have the skill, use Mana Reflection. It's actually pretty good if you want to make other Mages miserable.
  • Beware of Magic Crash and Rush/Monster Magnet.
  • If everyone in the whole PvP match goes to one platform and stays there without running away when they have low hp, everyone will get maximum experience points.
  • Watch out for Doom and Dispel from Bishops, and possibly Mana Reflection from other Adventurer Mages.
  • Cast Infinity just before jumping down from the invincible platform.

  • In those few 1v1 situations, TS might be the better option over Composition since it isn't hindered by obstacles like walls.
  • If you have the skill, use Mana Reflection. It's actually pretty good if you want to make other Mages miserable.
  • Stay away from Battle Mages using Tornado Spin. Don't even try to attack them or get near.

If you stay a platform above jobs like gunslingers, archers and assassins, their attacks won't hit you.

Note that Chain Lightning is an extremely powerful attack when used telecasting. Also, you should have elquines up along with your buffs before you jump down. Save Infinity for when you are half health because it DOES regenerate your HP. Also, if there is a massive fight that is close ABOVE you, I have found it very easy to charge up big bang, jump, and release in the air. Due to the huge hitbox of big bang, it can hit while in the air and keep you out of the battle. Ice Strike should also be noted to be able to strike below and above you, AS WELL AS UNITS ON LADDERS. This is extremely useful for catching people.

*Edit*

Thunder Spear should be used over Elemental Composition because EC's projectile is extremely difficult to land. Ice Demon is also a great "line" skill when you're standing just outside the battle. Blizzard is very effective for catching people with low HP that are running away. Also, used Blizzard right before you are about to die as it will come directly off cooldown once you respawn. Also, used Blizzard right before the battle ends. Blizzard has a 3 platform hitbox, which means the 2nd platform is the best platform to blizzard on (in terms of height). Seal is best used in conjuntion with Slow (put them in a macro together). This way, they are unable to use skills to run, and they are also slow, allowing you to have free time to rack up points with Chain Lightning.

At the moment, Ice Demon does not make units ice weak. If and when they fix that, it will be a good idea to use it in conjunction with both Blizzard and Ice Strike for maximum damage.

In particular to Mechanics, Corsairs, and Bowmasters, Thunderbolt is extremely effective. If you find these three classes locking in their Missile Tank Siege/Battleship/Hurricane in a corner in the Pink Bean map, stand on the platform or on the ground (whichever platform they are NOT on) and spam Thunderbolt. Because Thunderbolt hits in an area around you, they will miss their line shots while you can simply hit them from a safe zone. However, only save this tactic for these specific situations because TB is very weak in comparison to TS, IS, and CL. If they aren't locked down in a corner, it is more effective to simply teleport behind them and use CL.

XD no problem.

*Edit*

Could you elaborate on how Mana Reflection is only a counter for other mages? I thought it reflects all sources of damage =S

I don't understand the point of macroing Slow and Seal together. You won't be able to see the cool-down unless you also macro Slow and Seal separately on the Quickslots.

As well, the lag might make it such that you only use one of the macro'ed skills instead of both. In that case, Seal/Slow becomes permanently unaccessible if you only rely on the macro key until the CD expires or you die.

I haf a few questions.
Firstly, is dmg based on the number of hits, or the dmg dealt.
Secondly, should IS or thunderbolt be used. IS freezes but thunder hits three times.
Also, should telemastery be kept on or off. Why?
Thanks in advance

1. I keep TM off. I'm not sure if it actually makes teleing slower or if lag is making it seem that way.
2. Both TB and IS should be used. IS is the better skill but it has a cd, TB is spammable.
