1) x^2 + 1.4x - 1.2

2) 3x^2 - 29/2x +14

thanks guyz

x^2 + 1.4x - 1.2
5(x^2+1.4x-1.2)
5x^2+7x-6
(5x - 3) (x +2)

3x^2 - 29/2x +14
2(3x^2 - 29/2x+14)
6x^2 - 29x + 28
(3x-4)(2x-7)

x^2 + 1.4x - 1.2
x^2 + 7/5x - 6/5
1/5 ( 5x^2 + 7x - 6 )
1/5 ( 5x - 3 ) ( x + 2 )

3x^2 - 29/2x +14
1/2 ( 6x^2 - 29x + 28 )
1/2 ( 2x - 7 ) ( 3x - 4 )

You can't just multiply by 5 because OP's problem is an expression, unless it's an equation. (Need to divide by 5 again)
x^2 + 1.4x - 1.2
= (x+2) (x-0.6)

@Caeg @sparkshooter @risoru

In my book, the answers are 1) 0.2(x+2)(5x-3) 2) 1/2(3x-4)(2x-7)

@sparkshooter

x^2 + 1.4x - 1.2 <---- I understand
x^2 + 7/5x - 6/5 <---I understand
1/5 ( 5x^2 + 7x - 6 ) <---- I dont understand
1/5 ( 5x - 3 ) ( x + 2 ) <---- I dont understand

EDIT:

x^2 + 1.4x - 1.2 <---- I understand
x^2 + 7/5x - 6/5 <---I understand
1/5 ( 5x^2 + 7x - 6 ) <---- I dont understand
1/5 ( 5x - 3 ) ( x + 2 ) <---- I dont understand

I understand how you got the answer (5x-3)(x+2)

But I dont understand the 1/5 outside the brackets..

^Sinxe x^2 divide by 1/5 gives 5x^2, 7/5x / 1/5 -> 7 and so on. Afterwards you would get 1/5(5x^2 +7x -6). Then multiply the 5 coefficient by the ending # -6 to get -30, afterwards find 2 #'s that multiply to -30 and add up to 7x. In this case it would be 10 and -3. So the next step is 1/5(5x^2+10x-3x-6) [Basically it is still the same as having is as the equation before! But now you can factor stuff out.] Now you can factor things out 1/5(5x(x+2) -3(x+2)), then you can factor out once again so it is 1/5(5x-3)(x+2)

If your statement is still true __But I dont understand the 1/5 outside the brackets..__ (Thanks basilmarket italics)

Imagine this
X= (3Y +90Z)
X=(2/2)(3Y +90Z)
X=(6Y +180Z)/2

The (5/5) in your question is always there. Invisible. A One. Until manipulated by you.
