Rumor: copied/pasted from somewhere else.

Challenge: I dare you to find any non quoted part of this thread copied and/or pasted from another website. Heck, I encourage all - who said I did not type all that I typed - to go on google and look for the 'original' version of this thread which doesn't exist. I will admit that there was a much earlier rumor/myth thread that only had 2 rumors (kerning pq and ladder + hands} and thus died within a week. Continue reading if you wish =)

Maple Story

What is believed by a bit less than half the MS population: Nexon made MS.

Verdict: False

Conclusion: Maple was created by Wizet and Nexon is the company that published it. Please note that Wizet was the publisher for Global MS until quite a few patches ago. As of right now, Nexon is the official publisher of GMS.
List of publishers of Maple Story around the world:

Wizet
Nexon
Shanda
AsiaSoft
Gamania

Game Masters

Game Masters aka Nostradamus...I mean GMs
Myth One: Lawl, everyone knows they don't exist
Myth Two: Reporting hackers won't make them come out of the cave they share with Osama

Verdict/Conclusion: Reporting has caused people to get banned. Some examples of the people I have reported and have been banned a few moments later:
RoyRolls, Sockers, itachikunz, MoeCheen, EXPSpearORLY, Biadeknight, and MORE all for the low low price of 3 easy payments of $33.33
Thus proves that reporting hackers do get them banned and oh em gee, GMs DO exist! [gasp]

Fourth Job Advancement and the ? Scroll

I'm only going to explain the basics, not the details, since we (GMS) don't even have 4th job thus far.
Lemme just explain this without any 'myth number 1' and other crap.
4th job is done in Riprey. You obviously talk to the person who is appropriate for your job.
To make the 4th job advancement, you have to do a quest. This quest requires you to hunt two monsters until they drop (HARD TO FIND) the 4th job quest items (there are two).

HOWEVER, you have another option. In Eos Tower, there is an NPC who sells the scroll we have come to love called '? ?' or something of the sort. The scroll is called 'Scroll of Secret' and if you choose to buy this scroll for 10 million mesos, then you can make the 4th job advancement without having to find the necessary items from the two monsters. DO NOT buy these scrolls for over 15 mil from other gamers since:

1) 4th job isn't even out for us
2) You can buy them for 10 mil in eos tower
3) You've waited so long to get to 4th job. What's another boat trip to ludi and back?

If you are one of the impatient bunch, then people will sell the scrolls they bought from the npc for about 50%-200% higher than it costs. Obviously, not suggested to buy from other players unless if they are selling for 1 mil above the price or 10 mil just like the npc (in which case, the seller will be ripped off by tax)

Life After Level 120

Rumors: You should stop training at level 120 because they won't let you use the skill points after level 120 after you make the advancement

Verdict: Skill points CAN be accumulated after level 120 and used after the advancement. Therefore, when you reach level 120, use up ALL your skill points and SAVE the points you get after level 120, for you will be able to use them after the advancement. It is even said as a MapleTip for current 3rd jobbers.

Past Proof: Back in early release of the official version of Global MS, there was no 3rd job advancement for those who have leveled past level 70. Many people stopped training after level 70 in fear of losing the extra skill points they trained for. A MapleTip announcing everyone to save points after level 70 for the 3rd job advancement was well...announced and many still thought that the skill points will be wasted. It is with past proof and the MapleTip that I conclude that it is SAFE to level past level 120, remembering to SAVE the skill points earned after that level. And yes, I know how redundant this section sounds.

Night Road VS Night Lord

It is a 50-50 split on what people think the name of the 4th job assassin is. In Korean, this 4th job class is pronounced 'Na-ee-teu Loh-deu.'
Background info: [i]There 14 consonants including a placeholder/ng sound in Hangul (the Korean alphabet). Listed below are what sounds each consonant makes:

G N D L M B S 'placeholder/the ng sound' J CH K T P H.

As you can see, we have no 'R' sound ~(omg how can you live without the awesomeness of R?). Instead of 'R', we use the 'L' for both the L and R sounds.[/i]

That being said, when translating from Korean to English, there may be some complications because of the L (or in korean 'Li-ul). Thus, many translate using an L instead of an R or vice versa and this is the reason for most translation mishaps. Do not rule out that the name of the 4th job assassin could be 'Night Road', however, it makes much more sense for them to be called 'Night Lord' and it still makes sense when translating from Korean to English.

Conclusion: It's a 95-99% chance the actual translation was meant to be 'Night Lord', however there is still a chance that it might be 'Night Road'. And one more thing, don't trust the Nexon websites because as you can see in Maple Story and their other games, some translations make you think they were on crack.

Fame + Drops

Fame DOES NOT improve drop rate. If you go to someone with 1 fame and compare him/her to Diego for example, you will find that Diego will probably not get 100x the drops. Drops are based on chance predetermined for each monster by the makers of the game, Wizet.
Fame is simply used for equipping some items and to do some quests.

Drops

Rumor One: Drops are predetermined when a monster spawns. Whoever kills that monster, gets the drops.

Rumor Two: It's all about timing. When you kill a monster two milliseconds after it spawns, it drops differently than if you kill it after two seconds.

Rumor Three: Completely Random.

Rumor Four [gasp! FOUR?]: Drops are predetermined using a random number table.
This is somewhat shown on the TI Graphing Calculators. If everyone goes to rand->123 and makes it pick a random number, then everyone will get the same number. Maple Story drops might use a system such as this:

17230109578961209384
18761532095812897650
12398751092879991248
97623455098721098712
91987454113215992134

There could be something that makes it so that each drop gets 10 digits. If the number 999 is seen as it is in the 10 digits, then the monster will drop a rare item. If anything from 089-143, then the monster drops a number of mesos, the amount being the number seen in the 10 digits. This is really complicated, but if you've done it on the TI Graphing calc, it's much easier to visualize. And of course if Wizet does this, then they will obviously need more than 10 digits.

Verdict: I can't really say...There is no way to know how drops are determined for each monster, unless if you go straight to Wizet and threaten them with BB guns until they tell you o.o

Conclusion: There is no way to tell how drops are determined. However, most believe it to be Rumor One (which I also believe) =)

Nx FTW

Rumor: Buying Nx will guarantee/improve not getting banned from the game.

ConclusionSimply put, ask any or all of these people on Maple Story. They are all Nx Users:

RoyRolls, Sockers, MoeCheen, DDRZombie, EXPSpearORLY, turtledit, DeadIyStab, monkybaII, GangstaXD, 350dgrz, K3RM, 0oEGGSo0, last0ne, Current, AmericanDit, sinturtle7.

*Edit*: Sorry, all those are banned.

Duplicate Your Items!

Myth One: Tab Tab Space Enter

Myth Two: Press Trade but DONT click 'accept'. Instead type: 'copy' and Voila! You have a duplicated item.

Conclusion: Amazingly, these actually DO copy items. It's like this: It copies the item onto the other person's inventory, then it deletes the copied item from YOUR inventory. But seriously...it DOES NOT copy items. It's called a 'scam' and the person doing this is trying to steal your items. Please don't fall for this and if you want to try it out, try it with arrows. Don't forget to report. And yes, people actually do occasionally get banned for scamming.

Bob teh Snail

Although it would be quite awesome if he truly did have magical powers, Bob the Snail DOES NOT improve the percentage rate on scrolls.
Each 60% scroll will work 60% of the time. Each 10% scroll will work 10% of the time. Every other scroll will work for their respected percentage rate. And no, 100% scroll will never fail. . .unless if you drop it by accident, then in which, YOU fail.

Funny video on the legitness of Bob: link
Bob the Snail is located here: link

This being said (copied from PearlDragon for the sake of ease):
100% scrolls will work 100% of the time
70% scrolls will work 70% of the time and destroy the item 15% of the time
60% scrolls will work 60% of the time
30% scrolls will work 30% of the time and destroy the item 35% of the time
10% scrolls will work 10% of the time

Another note: If your scroll fails, well. . .at least you have someone to blame xD

King Slime and his Babies

This myth has been in existence since Pre-GMS and to this day, many people including some 3rd jobbers still believe it to be true.
Back when I was level 30, my friend and I put it to the test as we pqed. Every other pq, we would make sure the slimes stay alive. And after each PQ, we recorded our results. (5 pqs each)
Slimes Killed: Pure water, 2 10% overall dex, addy ores, diamond ores
Slimes Spared: 10% Helmet def, steel ores, 10% glove dex, green bamboo hat, mithril ores

As you can see, the rewards are slightly different in value, but there is no proof that killing or not killing the slimes will affect what items and how great an item will be for finishing the last stage.

Conclusion: For you I/L wizard who put their first point into lightning or for those warriors who have slash blast, have some fun by destroying that huge mob of slimes that appear after you beat the crap outta King Slime =).

99.99%

This topic has been discussed way too many times.

Rumor: 99.99% is and was NEVER possible.

Verdict: FALSE

If you were playing ever since GMS came out, you would know that 99.99% was possible. I remember hitting it so many times in the level 3x and 4x. HOWEVER, a patch made it impossible to get 99.99% which led people to believe that 99.99% was NEVER possible and the highest percent you could EVER get was 99.98%. Unfortunately, I don't have screen shots of me at 99.99% from almost two years ago (seriously...if I kept all those screen shots, it would have flooded my computer). My word and the word of others who remember this (and hopefully some who have screen shots of themselves at 99.99%) are all that you have.

Evidence: link <--- Way back when we had the old cursor (Pre-hand shaped cursor)
Evidence: link <--- After the pre-hand shaped cursor era.
Evidence: link <--- taken right before I leveled up on July 29th. It's 1 exp away from level up.

Conclusion: Stated above o.o

IP Ban

Not much info on this BUT
If there were to be an IP ban, it would be quite ineffective. Many people know how to change their ip thus, making IP bans pointless.

Mindstormer said: "Regarding IP bans, they will never happen not because they are easily bypassed, but because there are many internet service providers that assign IP Addresses from one person to the next. Eg. you could get 192.168.1.101 when connecting to the internet, ten minutes later you disconnect after getting ip banned for hacking and someone connects and gets the same ip. Well guess what, they would be IP banned to. This is the main reason why IP banning will not and cannot efficiently exist. Too many people would be banned for no reason due to their internet service providers sharing IP addresses."

Free Pin

Rumor One: Pin Crackers exist
Rumor Two: Pin Crackers don't exist

Verdict: They do exist
Proof:

Bonus EXP From Patch .35

BEFORE the patch, if you and your party member were to kill slimes or whatnot, the total exp would be greater than 10 (the amount a slime gives)
For example, you would get 7 exp when you kill a slime, and you would get 4 exp whenever your friend kills a slime.
This is assuming you both are within a few levels of each other.
Now since the new patch was released, the exp from partying is shown separately. Just know that this 10% bonus exp was ALWAYS here.
If you have read in the beginners guide in maple story (Yes, I can't believe I actually read the whole thing), it says, has said, and will always say this:

In the Various Features of the Beginner's Guide under Party/Buddy list, for number 3, it states:

Benefits of Party
If a fellow party member of a similar level is hunting in the same map, you can share an additional 10% EXP bonus. With different sets of skills from 2nd job advancement onwards, some party members may benefit more than the others. If there is a huge difference in levels between the party members, the earned EXP may not necessarily be shared.
Note: The benefits of being in the same party will only work in the same map. The leader of the party reserves the right to expel members.

Faeries at Mushmom

The myth: Killing a Faerie at Mushmom will make Mushmom spawn right after the Faerie is killed.

Experience: Last year, when I would go on MM hunts with a few friends, killing a Faerie would indeed make Mushmom summon. About 2 weeks ago, I went on another Mushmom hunt. Of all the Mushmoms I killed, none of them spawned because I killed a Faerie. This is from me going crazy every time I saw a Faerie, teleporting everywhere just to kill the Faerie right as it spawned. This ultimately lead to the absence of Mushmom after I killed the Faerie.

Conclusion: Mushmom DOES NOT summon just because you killed a Faerie. Mushmom spawns if there is a certain amount of monsters in the map during the time slot it is planned to spawn. If no one disturbs Mushmom's domain, then She will not come out to yell at those darn kids.

Hands

Hands: It's usually what you type with unless if you are using your elbows or feet...in that case, kudos.
Hands for Maple Story has existed FOREVER and to this day there is absolutely NO KNOWN USE for it. Hands is simply the combined total of DEX, INT, and LUK.

Myth One: It helps you stay on ladders and whatnot.

Verdict: FALSE. My level 4 mule (20 Hands) stays on ladders just as well as my Level 72 Mage (404 Hands). How well you stay on the ladder seems to be the angle in which you got hit and if you are still in the process of climbing. There is no surefire way to know if you'll stay on a ladder or not...which brings us to the next myth.

Myth Two: If your Hands was at the value of 200, you will stay on the a ladder or rope IF AND ONLY IF the damage dealt to you is equal to or less than 200.

Verdict: FALSE. As I have said in myth one, I still get knocked off a few times by slimes that do a great deal of damage, 1. 1 damage is 404 times less than my current value of Hands and I still get knocked off ladders and ropes by only 1 measly point of damage.

Myth Three: Hands is Magic Attack accuracy.

Verdict: FALSE. My STR magician is able to hit monsters with great ease even though it is only level 24 with 28 hands (At this level most magicians have around 80-100 depending on equips/stat distribution). This brings us to the character's Level being a factor in Magic Accuracy.
Note: I made my STR mage and it's hella fun outdamaging other classes with your physical attack xD

someone said: "1.Hands Myth i just thought up: Hands is the pick up rate of items. For example, fi you have 200 hands then you can pick up items than someone with 20 hands."

That is called LAG. My mule with 20 'Hands' picks up items just as fast as my mage with 400+ 'Hands.'

Conclusion: Hands has nothing to do with ropes, chutes, and ladders. It's simply the summation of DEX, INT, and LUK and by looking at KMS, I still do not see a use for this stat. Like physical attackers, a magic user's level also determines the rate in which it is able to hit said monster.

Cursing in Maple Story

Myth One: If you are able to say a 'bad' word that is normally not possible to be said in Maple Story, you are a hacker.

Myth Two: Saying curse words in Maple Story is not a bannable offense.

Verdict and Conclusion: Both statements are indeed false. If you do see someone saying bad words, they are using what I do not want to share with the rest of the population, for many kids will probably abuse it. If you know how to do this, just nod and walk away. And yes, cursing is a bannable offense as stated in the Maple Story website (and it is 1 in the morning and I really don't want to do this anymore even though sleeping is quite useless to me at the moment. (I just drank 4 cans of monster at a party 2 hours ago and you're not supposed to take more than 3 per day xD)

NOTE: I KNOW HOW TO CURSE IN MAPLE STORY. SO STOP PMING ME ABOUT 'oh, btw, you use ___'. It's stated above there that I did not want to share how to curse to prevent abuse. Please read before you send me anything >.<

Maple Story DS

Myth One: What? No way!

Myth Two: They don't care about us. We'll never get it in the states...[sigh] I guess i'll have to download a rom.

Myth Three: Oh great...Now I'm gonna have to restart after 5 million grueling hours of leveling. I wish I can just play my current characters on it.

Myth Four: Yay...screw over us PSP users.

Actual Gameplay: link
Verdict and Conclusion: Taken from an article posted on link :

"Here's an interesting bit of news that has gone largely unnoticed. Maple Story, a free 2D MMORPG by Wizet and published by Nexon, will be hitting the Nintendo DS. It looks like Nexon is actually collaborating with Nintendo on the project. If there is any MMORPG that could work with the DS, other than Pokemon, it's this.

For now, whether or not the game will be released outside of Korea is unknown. However, this announcement was at E3 so who knows? I might actually go back to playing it if it's on the DS... I quit after Wizet backstabbed its fans by deleting their beta characters after repeatedly denying it would happen. Still, it's a good game for beginners to the MMORPG genre. The learning curve is not very great at all and it's completely free to play. It's not a flash game, you'll have to download the file at their official website."

Note: And yes, you PSP users will probably get screwed over [fake tears run down my face as I play Mario Kart DS]

Fin

I have no doubt there are more rumors and/or myths, but for the time being and the number of 'newbs' we have in basilmarket, this should serve well.
And I do believe there was a thread like this a while back.

Thank you everyone! I would have sent this into the 'Guides' section but then it won't leave room for suggestions and comments like the ones you all have given me =)

And thank you to everyone who has contributed myths or rumors I have forgotten or have not heard of.
And also thanks to everyone for their support =)
And as always, Happy Mapling (even though training without a priest friend makes life horrible F5)
