Please contact me should you find any other problems.Introduction So I've noticed many Basilers going around asking: 'What is Singlish?'. If you're one of them, this guide's for you! I made this guide not just to clear the doubts of some, but to also give other players a clear understanding or Singlish, and also to help out players who have problems with Singlish in MapleSEA. The guide's also one of the few vacation-goals I planned out, so yea, 1 down! What is Singlish? Singlish is the informal, spoken Asian English indigenous to Singapore, a 'language' some would call 'Singaporean English'. Singlish is derived from Singapore's multi-lingual society of Chinese, Malays and Indians, and most Singaporeans speak Singlish as a second language to the respective dialects. Standard English grammar does not apply to Singlish. Grammatical endings, tenses, plurals and other rules are ignored, thus creating a more direct rhythmic discourse. This 'sing-song' quality, drawn from Chinese and Malay cultural influences, is what makes Singlish special and unique to other parts of the world. ***Speling may vary!*** A • Action: To 'action' is to show of or brag about something. • Ah beng: A name to describe someone with a poor fashion sense or behaviour. Often used for males. • Ah lian: (Check 'Ah Beng'). Often used for females. • Ah ber then?: Other spelling-forms inclde: 'Ah be then?' A rhetorical question that implies one is an idiot for not seeing the obvious. • Ah guah: Other spelling-forms include: 'Ah gua' Gay • Ah ma: Grandmother; Old woman. • Ah pek: Grandfather; Old man. • Ah pui: A name to describe someone who is just plain fat. • Aiya: Other spelling-forms include: 'Aiyah¡'. 'Ai-ya¡', 'Ai-yah' Used to express frustration, fatigue, impatience, shock or disbelief. • Alamak: An exclamation of shock and disbelief. • Ang moh: A term to describe whites / caucasian. B • Blur: To describe someone who is confused. • Bo: Lack of something. • Bo-liao: Bored; Boring • Bo bu: No mother. Often used as an insult. • Bo chap: Don't care / Not giving any attention. • Bo pei: Other spelling-forms include: 'Bo bei' No father. Often used as an insult. • Bo pian: A term to describe a hopeless situation. • Botak: Bald; Shaven. • Buay sai: Unable to do something. • Buay song: Other spelling-forms inclde: 'Buey song' Unhappy with somebody. Term often used to pick up fights. C • Chee bai: Other spelling-forms inclde: 'Chi bai', 'Chee bye', 'Chi bye', 'Ji bai¡'. Women's pubic area. Often used as a word of insult. Is also known as a word that begins with the letter 'p', and ends with the letters 'ussy'. • Chio: Beautiful; Gorgeous OR Slutty • Chio bu: Beautiful girl. • Chiong: Charge; Attack. In Gobal MapleStory, its known as 'grind (on monsters)'. • Chope: Other spelling-forms inclde: 'Chop' To reserve or hold on to something. • Choy: A word used to ward off misfortune. D • Dao: Other spelling-forms inclde: 'Tao' Used to describe someone who is vain and arrogant; Ignore. • Diam: Other spelling-forms inclde: 'Tiam' Be quiet. • Diao: Lame; Boring. • Die die: Absolutely; No matter what happens. Usually used in the beginning of a sentence. E • Eh sai: Direct translation: 'It's possible?'. F • Fatty bom bom: Used to describe a fat-bottomed person. G • Ga ni: Other spelling-forms include: 'Gani' Term used to express one's frustration, displeasure and anger. Direct translation: That word. Well, it begins with an 'F'.... • Gundu: Other spelling-forms inclde: 'Goondu', 'Gundoo', 'Goondoo'. Stupid. • Guai lan: Term used to describe an annoying person. H • Hah?: Other spelling-forms inclde: 'Harh?', 'Har?' Direct translation: 'Huh?'. • Hao lian: Vanity; Arrogance. • Heng: A word used to describe good fortune or to have luck on one's side. • Hamtam: Other spelling-forms inclde: 'Hamtum', 'Humtam', 'Humtum'. K • Kan cheong: To hurry while flustered or uptight.. • Ka ni na bei: Other spelling-forms include: 'Kaninabei' Direct translation: 'Screw your father'. • Kao bu: Direct translation: Cry for mother. Often used as an insult. • Kao Pei: Other spelling-forms include: 'Kao bei' Direct translation: Cry for father. Often used as an insult. • Kaypoh: Other spelling-forms inclde: 'Kaypo' Term used to describe a nosey person. • Kenna: Other spelling-forms inclde: 'Kena' To get or receive something, usually unpleasant. • Kenna sai: Other spelling-forms include: 'Kena sai' To get stained by s**t. Used to describe someone who is a disgrace. Also used to describe one's irritation • Kiam siap: Miserly; Mean. • Kiasee: Other spelling-forms inclde: 'Kiasi' Afraid to die. Used to describe one who always fear the worst. • Kiasu: Afraid to lose out to others. Always wanting the upper hand or something that is free. • Kopi: Coffee. L • La: Other spelling-forms inclde: 'Lah', 'Larh' An indispensable utterance used at the end of a sentence. Underlines meaning or places emphasis. 'Spices' up the entence. Sometimes used as a tag word with no particular meaning at all. Gives sentence a 'sing-song' quality. Is like pepper to a soup. • Lan: Weak; Powerless. • Lan jiao: Male genitals. • Lan Si: (Check 'Hao lian'). • Leh: Suffix used in an enquiring manner. Sometimes used to convey a sense or surprise. • Liao: Already • Lor: Other spelling-forms inclde: 'Loh', 'Lorh' (Check 'La') • Lose face: To lose dignity. M • Mai: Don't want to. • Makan: To eat. • Meh: Often used at the end of a sentence to enquire about something. N • Nia: Other spelling-forms include: 'Niah' Term used to emphasize something. Often used at the end of a sentence. • No nid: To have no need for something. O • On: Agreed. Often used in negotiations. OR Active; Enthusiastic. • Onli: Other spelling-terms include: 'Oni' Only. Often used at the back of a sentence. • Siam: Move along; Get lost. • Sian: Bored; Tired; Sleepy. • Siao: Used to describe a person who is crazy or plain stupid. • Sibei: Term used to emphasize something. • Sohai: Stupid. • Sot: Mad and crazy. • Sotong: (Check 'Blur'). Also known as 'Octopus'. • Suay: To be extremely unlucky. I see some Indonesian words. Malay and Indonesian dialect are basically the same. They come from the same language.It's just that Indonesian words are mixed with Dutch and Malay are mixed with English.

Kinda sucks that I still have to go back to serve in the NS. Darn Singapore, I hope global warming rises the sea levels and Singapore gets covered ~<3

It's not that we don't learn English, it's that most Singaporeans don't speak English, even though it is our 'first language'. Well, LKY discovered your logic long before you were born...

So, yea, they aren't in the list." But they use it in such a horrible manner that it's used with English words behind/in front of it. And words like "diam" are of Malay origin, :| so I think you should reconsider. Other Malay words in this list: Hamtam (it's spelt Hentam, originally, btw.) Kopi Alamak Botak Sayang Makan :| Mehh. |
