Introduction Welcome to Fashion Corner. We're a smaller, more laid-back community where, I find, it's easier to make closer relationships and get to know one another. This guide is for those new to Fashion Corner, or those who need some...suggestions. This is not an attempt at trying to be the boss of Fashion Corner or be 'famous' on Basil for writing a guide, it's an attempt to clear a lot of the things that have been going on this forum recently so we can enjoy our time here. Oh yeah, much thanks to EaKisaki for...well, most of the material. I wanted her guide to be the only primary source (original piece of information, I still have Social Studies on my mind), but let's just say it wasn't kid-friendly enough. Thanks also to abakre2, EaKisaki, ctrlsinz, cuisses, bSquad and Dweomer for editing and helping me revise the guide before posting it. Anyways, on with the guide. Updates Last updated October 26, 2008. July 9: Posted guide in Fashion Corner after writing in Scraps and peer editing/revising. July 10: Linked ToC, woohoo! Also added a guide about EXP cosmetics in the Helpful Links section by cuisses. July 15: Added that BannedStory is currently not working. See here for more details. July 16: Guide stickied July 19: BannedStory is up and running. Again, see here for more details. July 27: Fixed some outdated links. R.I.P. Ea's flaming thread August 29: Added in more Amusing Threads. September 13: Fixed the MTS link, thanks durr256 for pointing it out. October 7: Added Tvu2020's Nx Combinations guide. October 26: Removed the "Hit on the person above you thread" due to the fact that the TS thinks it should die :I Also, cuisses and Tvu2020's guide were stickied by Kazoo. Yay! Table of Contents ToC linked; thanks for the help Maverick. • General Ethics • NX Users vs. Non-NX Users • Asking for Ratings and Rating Others • HOT Items and Unoriginal/Original NX • Where Can I Find...? How Would This Look...? • Avoiding NX Scams • Helpful Links and Amusing Threads General Ethics The BasilMarket rules apply here, like any of section of Basil. Please read them and try to follow them as closely as you can. The rules are not here to restrict us; they're here to guide us. NX users vs. Non-NX Users Please note that this forum is not limited to users with NX. If you read the description of Fashion Corner on the forum list, it says 'Talk about NX and MS fashion'. However, NX and non-NX users, please try to coexist with each other. That means that NX users should not flame non-NX users about their lack of NX, and non-NX users should not flame NX users about buying NX. It is completely unnecessary to even bring that into a topic or conversation. Remember that others can choose to do whatever they want with their money and you have no right to tell them how to spend it. Asking for Ratings and Rating Others If you just got some new NX (I say NX because it's kind of hard to rate default clothing) and want to know what others think of it, feel free to make a 'Rate My NX' thread in Fashion Corner. But before you press 'submit', consider whether you're prepared to accept the ratings you will get. People will rate you honestly, which is what you've asked for. If you get lower ratings then you were hoping for, don't attack the user; instead ask them politely how you can improve. Please do not make a thread concerning your appearance more than once per appearance. Once you've altered your look, feel free to make a new thread. We have a 'Rate the person above you' thread already, see the Helpful Links and Amusing Threads section of the guide. On the topic of rating others, do not attack them on their choice of NX. Give them constructive feedback on how they can change, and compliment them on something you like. Just so people don't claim they were rated unfairly, I've created a 'Rating Rubric' that you may or may not choose to use. Thank you Dweomer for the basic idea. • Start with 4, because it's fairly neutral (Actually, there were too many components of the outfit to fit as 5 points). • Add or subtract 1.5 for the top (whether you like it as part of the outfit or not). • Add or subtract 1 for the bottoms. • If the person asking for a rating is wearing an overall, add or subtract 2.5. • Add or subtract .5 for the hat. • Add or subtract .5 for the shoes. • Add or subtract .5 for the gloves. • Add or subtract .5 for the cape. • It doesn't matter if they're transparent or not, just think about what the outfit would look like if they were not there. • Add or subtract .5 for the hair and it's colour. • Add or subtract .5 for the face and eye colour. • Finally, add or subtract .5 for any other miscellaneous things (face accessory, eye accessory, earrings, theme, matching, etc.). You should then have a total out of 10. This rubric is just a basic thing to use if you have no clue how to fairly rate another user. Different components to an outfit are more important to different users (eg. matching, the hat, originality...). HOT Items and Unoriginal/Original NX This is sort of a subtopic about ratings. Sometimes people will rate others lower because the outfit is made up of HOT items. They will say that the outfit is unoriginal, and rate it lower. Usually the rated will come back saying that HOT items are popular because they look good. Then a flame war begins about whether unoriginal/original is better, etc. Different people like different things. Just because the majority of Maplers like a certain item doesn't mean that the person rating you is in the majority of Maplers who think the item looks good. When you get rated low because of unoriginality, realize that not everyone is the same and move on. Where Can I Find...? How Would This Look...? You want that cool hairstyle you saw while PQing. You've got the NX, so you're going to go try to get it. Trouble is, you don't know which hair salon it's obtainable at and if it's EXP or VIP. This is where MapleFantasia comes in. MapleFantasia shows where hairstyles, hair colours, faces, and eye colours are and if they're EXP, REG, or VIP. MapleFantasia is slightly outdated as Showa and Ariant hairstyles haven't been added yet. Make sure you notice and use the key at the top of each page. As of now, Cuisses' EXP Hair & Face Guide is fully (just about, some names are unknown but all are included) updated to v0.60, so that is the first place to look for EXP hair names and locations. This guide does not include VIP hair and face locations, so check MapleFantasia for those. Now, say your NX runs out tomorrow and you're trying to plan your next look. Flipping through all the pages in the Cash Shop and taking screenshots of them so you can look back later is a complete pain. And it's impossible to test new looks with a different hairstyle or face without getting them (in game). Lo and behind, this is where BannedStory comes in. BannedStory is basically a MapleStory simulator where you can dress characters and maneuver in pretty much all the clothes in the game. You can also create pets and skills. Note: on the site, at the top, click 'Simulator'. I find that is unnecessary to download the whole program, but you can if you have room on your computer and don't like the waiting time MapleSim takes to load. Avoiding NX Scams Sometimes, users will come in advertising sites where you do surveys to get NX. Other times users will come in asking to buy NX. Those are scams, and if not, they aren't worth it. On those notes, I thought I'd add a section about how to get legit NX: I signed up once for a site where you do surveys to get points on an alternate email address. When I checked that email a week later, I had approximately 150 emails in my inbox, all containing survey offers (aka spam). I tried doing a survey, but I didn't have the right demographics they wanted to test. That happened with almost every survey I tried to do. It was completely useless, and I was so glad I signed up on my non-main email. Sure, some people may get NX from doing surveys, but it's not even worth it compared with the time and effort required (not to mention the spam). Sometimes you'll see users shouting: 'SELLING 10k NX OFFER'. When it comes buying NX through other people, it's extremely risky. How do you know you're not getting scammed? The seller could have easily given you a fake code and skipped away with the full, or half payment. You'll be left with less mesos and 0 NX. Buying NX from others in-game is simply not a good option. So, say your parents won't let you get NX, and you can't afford it. There's a much better option to get NX than the ways I mentioned above. It's called the Maple Trading System, or the MTS. The basic idea behind the MTS is that you can sell and buy in-game items for certain amounts of NX to and from other users. It's a legit, fairly easy, scam free way to make NX. More about the MTS and how you can get started here. Helpful Links and Amusing Threads Lastly, here are some sites that will help you out, and some of the 'game' threads in Fashion Corner.
