Orgo Labs lol - Part 2 it's ya boi again: Lab 2 went swell, had to synthesize acetaminophen from p-aminophenol + acetic anhydride and run a few TLC plates to determine certain unknowns. Took the whole 4 hours but you know, life sucks. Anyway I got sweet white crystals this time, recrystallized everything correctly, got a nice % yield. Everything went well except the end, where I threw out my recrystallized product (lol) BEFORE re-weighing it. hahahahahahha. just made up some data so yolo. someone else broke a beaker today and i just started laughing. Got my lab 1 results back but i was too scared to check 'em till just now. got a 62/100 lol. got home at 11 studied for my stats midterm (not really) then woke up at 6 because we be grindin'. F

Orgo Labs lol Wake up at 5:30AM, shower/eat then commute to school for my 8am orgo lecture. Train breaks down so get off at the next stop and RUN a half mile to show up at 8:35. nice. Back to back classes until 3:30, grab some rando lunch from a convenience store and go to my research lab till 4:30. idek how i'm alive at this point. orgo lab starts at 5:30, i'm feeling good as it's the first lab and I did my pre-lab assignment easily. boy was i wrong. at about 6:30pm i realize my sample looks contaminated, TA recommends I restart. Lol. Fast forward to 8:00PM, on the final step of evaporating off excess solvent to induce crystallization. Everyone is finishing around me, so I get a little worried. Buddy got his crystals in 8 minutes exact, wh

How do I go from volunteer to paid? Title. I'm researching in a neuroscience/molecular bio lab this summer at my university, and will start my second week tomorrow. Right now I'm just an undergrad volunteer in the lab, working under a PhD candidate and helping her out with some rudimentary tasks (washing dishes, preparing buffers, nothing too special). I know the lab has decent funding, as the main prof. just received a gigantic grant from the uni. I've spoken to some other undergrads in the lab and they've briefly mentioned a small "stipend", but ya boi is obviously looking for something more regular to pay for bus and train fares. How long should I wait before asking about getting paid?

Differential Equations Help Here's the question: dY/dt = (-2 1;0 2) * Y, where the first row of the matrix is [-2 1] and the second row is [0 2]. (a) Show that (0,0) is a saddle. (b) Find the eigenvalues and eigenvectors and sketch the phase plane. (c) On the phase plane, sketch the solution curves with initial conditions (1,0.01) and (1,-0.01). (d) Estimate the time t at which the solutions with initial conditions (1,0.01) and (1,-0.01) will be 1 unit apart. My answers are correct for parts a through c: Eigenvalues are -2 and 2, since they have opposite signs we have a saddle at the origin. Eigenvectors are <1,0> and <1,4>. My phase plane sketch is also correct, however I have no idea how to do part d. Answer is supposedly t=1.

Internship applications Just finished applying to a few internships for my desired major (biomed engineering). I'm feeling sort of iffy on one of them, however. A basic qualification for that position was that "the candidate must have taken at least 2 college-level biology courses by the start date), which I fail to meet since my school has BMEs take our first bio class Spring of sophomore year... Obviously I was not able to explain that on my resume, but I'm scared this may be used against me when looking over my application. I did take AP Bio back in high school (got a 4, which translates to credit for one bio course unless you're on the pre-med track which I am), but was not sure if that was even worth mentioning under my "rele

Is f.lux legit? For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, give it a try here. I've had it installed for a few days now and noticed a few things: 1) I originally had the nighttime lighting set to "halogen" but found that the orange tint was just way too much for me. I since then changed it to 4250K, and it's a little easier on my eyes. 2) When watching movies or shows, the orange tint really seems unnatural and imo disturbs the colors in the show/movie. Maybe that's just me getting used to the software. 3) When I disable f.lux for an hour, my eyes really feel weird when looking at the normal screen. It's like using the computer with crappy contacts that just don't work. Is this al

Skinny fat help I'm a 150lb 5'9 male who's skinny fat. I've recently gotten into weightlifting and have been going to gym on/off for about a year and a half now, showing some major improvements (went from ~120lb body weight to 150, hit 205 for reps on deadlift, almost benching plates, etc). However, I have never been able to shed the fat around my stomach area. I used to be a long distance track runner putting up 40-50 miles a week and doing dozens of pushups/crunches every day, but still never lost my layers of belly fat. I suspect my diet, as I used to drink lots of soda/sugary drinks and eat a bunch of crap. I'm Indian as well, which means that by its very nature the food we eat is saturated with oil, sodium, and cholesterol which is nev

Chem 101 help Suppose 0.691 grams of ammonium acetate is dissolved in 0.250mL of a 0.30M aqueous solution of sodium chromate. Calculate the final molarity of acetate anion in the solution. You can assume the volume of the solution doesn't change when the ammonium acetate is dissolved in it. I've been trying to solve similar problems for almost 2 hours now, but I simply can't get the correct answer (sig figs included). The pset is called "limiting reactants in solution." Thanks for your help!

Freshman Year Snagged two on-campus jobs lately, one in a Bio Lab and another as a Production Assistant. Hourly pay blows, but I'm just excited to make this transition. Currently a freshman at Uni majoring in Biomedical Engineering/premed: loving my Intro to Protein Engineering and Drug Delivery lab/seminar but slitting my wrists during Calc III and chem. Managed to get all my books for $265, which isn't too bad. Having second thoughts about going to med school and hating the fact that I can't use my AP credits to skip over general chem/bio, but that's life. Got randomly placed on an all-guys floor but it's aight since my neighbors are mad chill and we boys. Roommate's a little sketchy, but whatevs. Getting back into a lifting routine and l
