Uni/college students, do you take full semesters? I had been alternating between 4 and 5 classes, but I failed a course last semester. 5 classes, 3 labs, and bad profs is a bad mix on top of working and having a social life. I've decided that I'm going to stick to four for the rest of my degree. I figure an extra semester is worth my personal happiness and getting the marks I want. I have one friend in engineering who takes full loads, but other than that, the only other people I know who take 5 courses are pre-med/nursing because they're required to.

Bodybuilding and Fitness General I noticed over the last couple months, fitness has been a hot topic on Basil. However, a lot of the questions don't really deserve their own thread (i.e. could be answered by Google) so I figured a general fitness thread would be sufficient. I'll start: I've been doing a split for just over a year and I haven't been making as much progress (both strength and size wise) as I'd like. Today, I tried the Monday 5x5 Madcow routine. It felt absolutely pointless. I was exhausted after the squats, and my bench was 15lbs lighter than it normally was. My barbell row wasn't bad, but I don't even feel like I worked out. Zero pump. I also added calf raises and incline dumbbell presses. Does anyone have any natty intermed

Anyone in Computer Science? What year? how are you liking it? I'm in my second year, however I'm only in my second CS class because I wasn't sure what I wanted to major in during my first semester. It's just an object oriented c++ class, currently learning about classes and encapsulated data. My prof used to program at a firm with 80 other people, so he's big on software engineering methodology. My comments for my functions are longer than the functions themselves. The assignments are cumulative so it's pretty cool to have 1000+ lines of code across 6 .h + .cpp files

Are you planning to get your degree in four years? Less than 40% of students earn their bachelors degree in four years (source). As someone who took 5 classes, 3 labs and worked 20+ hours a week last semester, I can say that I have never been miserable in my life. Leaving the house at 6am and not getting home until 10pm more than once a week was awful. This semester I am again taking 5 classes, but I saved up enough money from working full time this semester so that I don't have to work. I'm just scared of next semester when I'm done with juvenile pre-reqs and electives. I'll be feet first into my major (comp sci) and I doubt I'll be handle a full load. Bu

Opening a txt file in XCode for a Cpp project I'm trying to open a .txt file called "earth.txt" and I cannot get it to work. Normally you can just drag and drop your file into the SDK and it becomes a resource automatically, but that didn't work. I even tried deleting that file, creating a new file with the same name, then pasting the information inside of that new .txt, but that didn't work either. Here's a tidbit of my code: ifstream inputfile; inputfile.open ("earth.txt" ); if (!inputfile) { cout << "Cannot open earth.txt" << endl; exit (1) } And yes, I have the proper sharp include. I always get my error message and it closes. I've never had an issue with this on Microsoft's SDK. I even showed i

Downloadable Educational Audio I landed a summer job driving the Google Streetview car (not nearly as glamorous as it sounds but the free trip to Toronto was cool). My friend bought to my attention that I could be learning another language or something while driving, instead of just listening to my iPod. I'm happy with being bilingual in Canada's both official languages already, so I'm looking for ways to learn about technology and science. It has to be downloadable because I don't have unlimited data. Thanks

Tastefully modding your car I recently picked up a 2005 Accord EX with the 3.0 VTEC Engine producing 240HP and 212ft/pd torque, paired to a 6 speed manual transmission. I was contemplating getting an 8th gen Civic SI, but I got a really good deal on this one and is significantly faster and more luxurious. Anyway, I was looking into some light mods. Nothing too serious because I want to maintain a good resale value. I want the three rear windows tinted without a doubt. Looks a lot better and the black leather interior gets really hot during the summer, so I figure a dark tint would help with that. But what does basil think of projector headlights and intakes? I want HIDs but retrofit

Which job would you chose? A couple of months ago, I applied for two student summer positions in IT departments. I have connections to managers at the two firms, so I felt pretty confident that I would at least get interviews. Time passed and the semester was nearly over, and no one had contacted me. On a whim, I applied for a job to drive the Google Streetview car around the southern part of my province. Within 15 minutes of submitting my resume via e-mail (name dropping someone important, of course); I was given the job before the manager had even met me. This was about two weeks ago, and it felt great to have summer employment so I could focus on finals instead of handing out resumes. I currently serve at a pub and I hate it, so I was de

Good student car? After 3 years of driving a 2001 cavalier that my parents bought for me to use, I've managed to save up a good portion of money towards a new car. However, I am absolutely torn on what I should be looking at. Some things that should be noted: - I have a $10k-$15k budget - I drive 40KM a day on the freeway to and from university everyday, so good gas mileage is appreciated - I live in Saskatchewan. It's icey and rut filled at least 5 months of the year. Very iffy about RWD because of this. - Must be manual. I nearly fall asleep at the wheel driving my car but I love driving my friends' manual prelude and WRX. I really like the Civic SI (2006+) and RSX Type S. But the SI goes for $12k+ and the RSX is close to $10k, which feel

University/College Students 3 or 5 classs? The other day at work, I mentioned I only work three times a week and it feels like too much some times. Two other servers who are both students said they both work 5 times a week and I was so confused as to how they balance their lives. It turns out they've both only been taking 3 classes a semester for their entire time in university, and the one guy even said it was "stupid" that I'm taking 5 classes. The thing is, I live pretty much expense free. I only have to buy books, parking passes and gas. My parents cover everything else. What's your perspective on this? I can't imagine willingly extending my degree to 6+ years so I can work for minimum wage (plus tips, of course). Regardless,
