How did people ever come up with "shotgun" to replace "passenger seat?" O.o

Apparently, back in the days, when police went out to like kill people or something, they always kept the shotgun on the front passenger seat so they can grab it whenever they want to. So technically, you want to be a shotgun, sitting in the front seat.

i actually know the answer lolppl back then (i think in the mob i forgot) had Driver and a dude in the passenger seat with a Shotgun..thus the phrase "I Call Shotgun"
