How did people ever come up with "shotgun" to replace "passenger seat?" O.o

Isnt it from old western timeslike there is the wagon...and the horses one guy whipping the horses, and one person sitting next to them with a shotgun incase of like..wolves..or "indians"

Actually, the reason they call it "shotgun" is because traditionally in robberies the person in that seat would shoot at the police when they chase them down.True stuff
