Getting a First Job

I just finished university and I have 4 months to waste until school starts again.
I want to find a minimum wage job, but I haven't been having much luck finding one since I have no work experience...
Does anybody have tips on getting their first minimum wage job? And if you already work, how did you get your first job?
any advice would help ! Thanks !

fradddd

My first job (which I still have) is being a courtesy clerk at a grocery store. But it was easy for me to get it (after waiting 3 months) because my brother worked there be he had to quit to go to college, and I personally knew the regional manager and he recommended me.

Apply to as many places as you can, write a good resume and cover letter, get references, and keep putting yourself out there until you find something.
LOL. You have the audacity to say that, yet your IQ is so low that you feel the need to ask basil advice on how to get a job- a basic one at that.

Oh man, this is too good.

Nah, Basil is just one of the resources I use to ask for advice; there is no problem. Believe if or not there are some people who are on this site who can give good advice, like a couple who have posted in this thread. Unlike you, if you have nothing to contribute to what I've asked, please do not post anything, it's people like you have give Basil's forums a bad rep. And to your statement on my need to ask Basil for advice on such a "basic" question, if it were that "basic", please tell me why unemployment rates for teenagers, and young adults is still to this date too high? [rhetorical question; don't bother responding]

don't look for a minimum job. look for an internship or job related to your major. minimum wage job is a waste of time; you might as well use that time to do better in your classes unless you desperately need money.

@Icephoenix21 Maybe I should have made it clear from what @Anefig said for those whose IQ is no bigger than my shoe size.

@nc4228 @Bearfruit Sorry, I don't play MS anymore, I haven't played since the Big Bang patch. But you kids have fun I just use Basil for the forums when I want to ask something; if you're curious why I'm using this site.
@Icephoenix21 Maybe I should have made it clear from what @Anefig said for those whose IQ is no bigger than my shoe size. But from context, its not hard to deduct that I meant I'm done the semester. And no I don't get things handed down to me by my parents, I don't ask for much tbh.
@NonSonoFronz no clue ! I've never had a minimum wage job but I've volunteered working with a doctor in a hospital for the past 2 years. Gah.. I should have started looking during high school [entering my third year this coming fall]
@Yumtoast really? weird, the majority of people who I've known who worked at McDonalds before who called in was scheduled for an interview and got hired either on the spot or a few days later. No online application needed.

How have you gone without having a job already?
I'm finishing up my first year of university and I've had two.

I got my first job that I held for a year and a half through my best friend (and he got the job because his dad was besties with the manager at the time).
Now I'm probably going to be working there at least a little bit over the summer because I have a history there and my best friend still works there.

I'd also recommend getting EMT-B certified. I know that was a reason I got my last job. (Or maybe because I have 7 years experience with the field, but who knows)

Are you looking to start a fight with the interviewer?
Tell me, from a previous manager's perspective, what about those people who walk in asking? Why do I ask even though you just said "No McDonald's manager or boss will call you in for an interview without your online application. It's company policy." Because I've been meeting a bunch of twits who say to me "You applied online? Well you should of done a walk in, we like people who aren't afraid to go in and do it in person", even though I do do that, I just end up getting "APPLY ONLINE, DUMBASS!" So tell me, WHAT THE HELL DO RETARD INTERVIEWERS WANT? Not to mention the questions asked are completely autistic, so clarity on them would be nice, "Why do you want to work here?" "Because I love heart attacks on a bun and McDonalds is my haven. Because I want a job obviously dumbass". Oh, another question I hate is "Why should I hire you over others?" Dammit, this is friggin McDonalds (or some other easy ass job), not some kinda job that requires a skill. Do they want me to say "I majored in Hamburger flipping and lard digestion, and my goal is to be the best frycook like Spongebob". ENLIGHTEN ME EX-MANAGER. Oh I get why they ask, because they wanna "blah blah blah, get to know you, blah blah blah, know what kinda worker you are", I totally get that, but I also get that they're horrible questions to do so and asking them makes the interviewer a not so bright light bulb. Like dam, I'm there to work, not be your best friend. Want me to take out the trash? I'll do it, I'll do whatever you instruct me to do because the job requires I do that and because I'm getting paid, isn't that good enough? Nope apparently, because I gotta be BFF's with manager-onii chan and all his imoutos.
#Rant
But seriously, what do interviewers want and expect? I've pretty much done everything people say when you go to an interview, well behavior wise. Well except smiling because I can't force a smile, I just keep a straight face, being serious. However my last interviewer told me I was being unfriendly because of my serious attitude and non-smiling face, though I failed that one because apparently my face scares little kids.

Oh yeah, another thing about interviews that annoys me is when they ask me when I can work. If I reply with "Anytime", they'll say it's too vague and I need to be more specific, and when I get specific and don't match their time table they'll just end it there and leave most of the time. Anything else I say ends up being moot, so these interviews feel like open ended multiple choice questions when they should be free responses. Now it may be just me, because I know a bunch of classmates and friends who end up getting jobs just after a few weeks. Either through connections or just going to random places, but either way they just try a few weeks and get it with ease. I've been trying for over a year and the closest I've ever gotten were just the interviews. I feel like I should just stop taking them seriously at this point, just go in, sit down chilled rather than straight posture and blah blah blah. If they ask me questions, I'll just reply with "I need a job" "Because those people are idiots", then they'll totes luvu luvu me right.

OT:
TS I can't offer you any advice since it seems I'm doing every possible thing wrong, so take my experience as stuff what not to do I guess.
You're asking the wrong person. I was a shift manager, so I did everything in the restaurant, minus hiring (and cleaning bathrooms). Though if I were to think of a reason why you weren't hired (I'm assuming you answered the interview questions at least decently), it would be the lack of a DAZZLING PERSONALITY. Learn to fake it during an interview, then you can act however you want after you get hired. As for the availability question, "anytime" is a vague answer for employers because you will never be available at all times; you might think that you'll be available all day, but it's never the case after you work at such a crappy establishment for more than 2 weeks. The best answers to give would include combinations of time slots such as 5/6:00AM to 11:00AM/2:00PM (breakfast rush preparation), 7/8:00AM to ~3:00PM (breakfast through lunch), 11:00AM to 6:00PM (lunch rush to the start of dinner), 8:00PM to 4:00AM (night shift, restock, and note this only applies if the McD's is open 24/7), and be willing to work at least 2 of 3 weekend days (i.e. Friday, Saturday, Sunday) if you plan on working full-time. The hours that I didn't mention (e.g. 2 - 3:00PM, 4 - 6:00PM, etc) are hours where you shouldn't ask to start because those are the most dead times of the day, and this includes a majority of restaurants.

And I don't know what idiots you were talking to, but all McDonald's -- or at least in California -- require an online application. Every single employee at the McD's I worked at, including the Mexicans that couldn't even speak a lick of English, had an online application filed.
He's not done with university. He's just done with the semester
Ah, he should clarify that he finished 'a semester of university' as opposed to saying 'I finished university'.

That being said, OP, how do you have absolutely no work experience? Have your parents handed everything to you?
lol..

How do you finish university and have no work experience?
Why would you finish university and aim for a minimum wage job?

Am I missing something?

If I was still working as a shift manager, I'd pick up the phone -- agitated that I have to pick up a phone call while working because assholes like to call during the lunch hour(s) -- and tell you to apply online.

No McDonald's manager or boss will call you in for an interview without your online application. It's company policy.

Do u REALLY need the money? I think u would be better off studying and playing maplestory unless u need the money to ease the tuition a bit.
ask your friends if they can hook you up with anything or if their place has any openings

This is spot on, I also got my first job through friends.
If you have no luck with friends you can always create a resume and apply in the food industry (think Mcdonalds but it's not your only option just giving you an example)
Also if you only have 4 months to work you might not want to be upfront about that, it could cause you to be overlooked compared to other people who are willing to commit for longer amounts of time and since summer is right around the corner there should be many opportunities for you to find something.
