What is with the main lead characters?
I was watching a ton of harems and I'm wondering why doesn't the main character be a man. She asking for the D but no they all turn away.....If you were the main char in the anime with a harem would you take that oppurtunity?

I think the logic of it is that since the guy isn't thinking dirty things, it makes him more appealing (I guess?).
Because them manga/anime makers gotta milk the series somehow. A dumb clueless main = more potential girls added to the harem down the road = a longer running manga/anime.

There are a bunch of basic concepts behind the "typical harem anime male lead", but the idea is simple - he's the proxy of all the male viewers of the anime. He's the guy you put yourself into for your "fantasies".
One reason the lead doesn't go after one girl directly and stick with it (until, like, the very last episode) is to continue the fantasy. Sure, the main guy gets with one girl and the fans of that girl are ecstatic, but the fans of the other girls all feel essentially betrayed... like they "bet on the wrong horse". Therefore, there will be situations where the lead and a girl get close, then the others catch up in turn... so every fanboy has his girl. That's pretty much it.
How can a harem even exist in the first place without a clueless and ignorant protagonist
