Why are you still playing Maplestory?

It's so obviously clear now that this game is a shell of what it used to be, even if they merged all servers into 1 it still wouldn't compare to before. The game's infrastructure itself is in shambles - why use the train, boats, planes, even VIP teleport rock, when you can teleport anywhere you want from that neat little pantheon portal, or even from the Maple Guide that teleports you to training spots. I was surprised when I saw that they still use actual NPCs in this game instead of just cramming them all into a little window just like they did with bosses and party quests. Maplestory has had a very long life but this story has a sad ending.

I'm a Beta player so this game has some sentimental value to me.. that and I spent literally thousands of dollars on it.. LOL! I took an extremely long hiatus though! Life got more interesting! I recently returned because of the 5th job update. Now 98% of my old guild is gone and I merely play to reminisce about the good old days and to kick major boss booty! Getting stronger now isn't too bad, it seems a bit easier than before!

@meiguihua: "Well it's a game I played as a child, so I can't leave it that easily."

This is how Nexon takes advantage of those that have played since ~2006. They target and literally suck the life out of those players, wasting years of peoples lives. Nexon feasts on those souls to fuel their servers, and since there are less and less souls to feed them, the state of the servers are rapidly declining.

Like those SAO players after 2 years of playing, lookin all malnourished n sht

@chopin: it's pretty hard to get your full investment out--for every dollar to put in (via NX), it retains 10~20% of it's "value" after a couple months*

I like maplestory as it is right now and I liked it back then in my childhood as well. Seems to be a pretty decent game except for the p2w factor but hey... they got to survive and make money somehow. Plus reboot is awesome cause you don't got to pay a dime for cubing.

Jumped ship awhile ago. Once the community dwindled I lost all reason to continue playing the game.
Another reason I was able to give it up easily is because of the fact that it's an entirely different entity from what I used to enjoy. Nexon strayed too far from the path that had long term success. They sacrificed longevity and player satisfaction for a quick profit.

For a long while I thought they could recover; much like how oldschool runescape did. At one point when I came back things felt like they were going to work out, and that the population was assuredly going to make a recovery. This didn't happen, and it's only gone further and further downhill. At this point things are too far gone.

@chopin: Yeah, your assessment solves the money problem but doesn't solve the problem for those who say that they have invested too much time. That was my excuse for a couple of weeks before I decided to finally pull the trigger on this game.

the other 2d side scroller mmorpgs suck even worse. try latale and soul savior and tell me they don't still play like an outdated junker. i'm past spending any money tho, before I would buy 20k nx here and there, but it's not even worth a dime anymore.

@helpingly: even so, its possible to get out of that by selling their stuff and get their $ back. thats what i did so its just an excuse to play at this point for those who say that "too much investment" crap

@helpingly: Well, if that's what they say. I think it's time for them to let it go. Money isn't that important. It's just a means to an end.

@wellness: I completely see your point. But I think that the general consensus is that people have invested too much time and money into it. At least, that's what I hear from everyone I ask. Sure, some aspects may still appear to them, but there is still that inkling of thought that exists somewhere in their mind. I simply don't think that anyone plays ONLY because it is fun for them anymore.

@helpingly: The polls aren't necessarily accurate. There may be people who vote that just because that's what they think maplers are like and that's not actually how they feel. The polling options are also not inclusive. There are investments other than money that people may be keen on.

And you know, this is a controversial issue. People are sensitive so they may vote a certain way out of anger or frustration. For this poll specifically.

I find the number one reason why people still play extremely sad. They already invested so much, yet they don't actually enjoy the game. So, they're just gonna pour more money into something that they don't care for.

@wellness: I blame Hyrule Warriors, dood. That game is all about murdering thousands of things just to level up so you can get stronger just to get an A rank on certain missions. It can be a great stress reliever sometimes. I'm probably going to spend another 3 years playing Fire Emblem Warriors too.

I want to reach my childhood goal of being somewhat funded. Playing my BaM is pretty fun at times too. Also 5th job.

The most important reason is that my characters are so cute, that's why I use basil.

I started playing back in 06 and really lost it in I wanna say 13. It's just as you said, a shell of what it use to be. Maple is just a good memory now of different friends, guilds and progress. Even now I am 29 and I would love to play it again, but I as well as my friends have all moved on in life, gotten jobs, started families and gained responsibilities that just don't allow for the same kinda time we dedicated back then. Life was easy and fun in college going to sleep late after training with friends and then waking up and jumping right back on. It was nice just saying good night and good morning. All of us were heavily excited for new content and when the 4th jobs first came out, it was like a massive party of everyone helping each other find skills and level up to use them. I had friends in the game and even villains always out to hinder our progress. One thing I remember was talking to a good friend of mine, after questing for a few hours, with him saying something alone the lines of " It's really sad that we are having so much fun right now, but it'll all end one day" and me saying " Dude it ain't about the destination, it's all about the ride"...and it sure was. Maple was another life for me man and I loved it, but now days, I'd rather it just remain a memory.

I really don't visit basil anymore. I just got a wild hair up my butt and thought..."hmm what's going on in the maple world".

Coolage signing off!

I play simply for my guild and nothing more than that. I despise hene h0s and their trickery. I also dislike merchants that actually try to make money off the game. Finding a new friend is very rare now especially when you played for 5 years took a break for 1 year and now back to it for another 4 years. Everyone you see on the world you basically know something about em. Farm name, same mules, similar igns, the same types of people. the same behavior. everything is just so repetitive.

@piana: Yeah, maybe I should try to form the completed conversational mask. Just need a little (a lot) of practice.

It may not be so simple, though, not because people are complex (they tend to follow certain patterns). It's just people have a way of not letting you get what you want -- so it seems pointless whether you approach them honestly or not. Depends on the person.

So yeah, I guess that causes me to not try sometimes (a lot).

@piana: I'm not a normal person. You will only find 1% type of me in this world. Or I just have an identity crisis. But you did well to legitimize my response.

I don't try hard. I do what a normal person do, what comes naturally. But maybe it's normal to act unlike yourself? I guess I do that a little, too. Total honesty/naturalness leaves room for weaknesses to be exploited, I guess. -shrugs shoulders-

Then again, if I were to do everything exactly as I wanted, my responses may be succinct/curt.

School brainwashed me a little I think.

@piana: I see. Well, I accept your feelings. It is late and that was a pre-planned neutral response. People do enjoy questing. It's the closest thing to something casual like the earliest arcade and console games that first mystified humans and is what leads to a generally successful game. I'm not sure why those sports games are popular, though. Same concept? -shrugs-

@piana: To be fair, though, historically they kill off the fun aspects in favor of money-grab RNG items and many people are opposed, so it may be a legitimate logical thinking. Like, they did pqs and party play wrong. So I guess some people like to grind the RNG items? -shrugs shoulders-

Also, do people really "enjoy" grinding? Killing thousands of the same monsters with few change in scenery to level up seems kind of absurd when you're doing it for days or weeks. It seems like something a very small amount of people would enjoy.

I don't play as much anymore. Have other things to do and already did everything what I wanted in Maplestory. Only purpose for logging in was to simply chat with maple buds, or maybe for the 5th job skill. Not even gonna bother doing the Union system and leveling up more characters as I felt it's really just another "thing" to do, rather than something I would actually be interested in doing.

Been fun during my time in Maplestory(I actually started from mid-2012?), but I think it's a good time to leave.

I trying to get rest of characters to 200, I want all of those SS ranks and Grand Master Union 1 rank thing, dood. I won't ever have to level up ever again. Holy fat lard, they take so damn long to bring Maple Union over here, dood.
I just want to experience Maple Union and be done with this game, I was disappointed for a very long time about having 9 character cards only. I'm also curious about Swordmaster's 2nd Vth job skill, dood.
