Is being Canadian/American an ethnicity or nationalitiy?

This question has been befuddling me for some time now, is being Canadian or American more or an ethnicity or nationality? Personally I believe that being Canadian/American is more of nationality rather than ethnicity, but when I asked my sister and she said that it is an ethnicity. I've also heard people talk about how they are either half-blood Canadian or American. Please give me your opinions on this topic.

Both countries have populations largely derived from immigrants or descendants of immigrants. Their is no clear homogenous genetic makeup of the populations of either America or Canada. It is an nationality.
This might vary.

For me my nationality is Canadian since I was born here [Nationality is a word that pertains to the state of origin] but my ethnicity is Indian [Ethnicity is a group of people who regard themselves to be different from others that are united by common traditional, cultural, linguistic, ritualistic, behavioral and religious traits.].
Now when I look at this girl who I am dating her nationality is Canadian and her ethnicity is European.

But then you think of the next gen (the kid). The kid nationality might be Canadian but what about the ethnicity?
Because of the two culture fusing it creates a new culture, with new tradition, with new rituals. What is this new group called?
Eventually the kid will call his or her ethnicity half Indian and half European or make a new one saying Canadian.
then the kid would be of half European half Indian ethnicity...
