Technically, it would be Phantasy Star Online I-II, since it is an online game, after all.
But I've never played the game with/against others online, only with those in the same room as me.
So, I guess I could say that I've never actually played a console game online before, just handhelds and PCs.

My first online game on any platform was Bust A Move Online.

Assuming that Neopets and Gaia and Yahoo RP chats don't count one dang lick, I think it was actually Maplestory. Geez, I think I had just graduated highschool. Right after the Pirate explorer class was added, but before Cygnus Knights. Geez frikin' geez. I'm old. o____o

(Not online? Mario Bros and Duck Hunt on the NES. Damn again.)

Console was Call Of Duty: World At War. Good times.
I never got to play WAW with others. I wish I did, I like its inclusion of battles and stories relating to the eastern front of WW2 which people in the west entirely ignore despite it unquestionably having been the most decisive as well as difficult for both belligerents and civilians alike. The Soviet Union itself lost nearly 30 million people to the war, which in eastern Europe is known as 'the patriotic war', not as WW2. That hell was fought for years, not on foreign battlefields but at home and in the middle of civilian life, in the biggest cities cities in all of Russia...all before USA and Britain even got started. In the end the war was basically won and lost the moment Zhukov encircled the Germans 6th Army, capturing or killing nearly 1 million Germans...and causing Germany to mobilize and dedicate the vast majority of its resources to the eastern Front which is the opening that allowed Britain, USA and France to even get a presence on mainland Europe. After that the USSR inexorably steam rolled over Germany, pushing the frontlines from Moscow to Berlin, ending with the final capture of the city. A lot of people trash the way the Russians behaved compared to the Americans but they totally ignore the fact that Germany invaded and killed millions and millions of their countrymen, family and friends...and in battlefields fought for years before the second front opened....battlefields that weren't an ocean or even channel away but rather right where the majority of Russians lived and where civilian life itself was taking place. There was a LOT of personal tragedy informing, fueling motivating the hatred Russia had for the Germans...emotions necessarily ran much higher and revenge was understandably more personal and visceral for the Russians than for USA.

Just for some context and source info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_casualties

Just wanted to give a short explanation for anyone curious so they could understand a bit about the war ignored because of propaganda, necessary or not. It's good to know about more than one side of history anyways. xD Another forgotten fact is the number of Chinese that died as a result of Japans contribution to the war. This portion was obscured and hidden, even covered up and lied about, often directly because of General Macarthur's attempt to ensure Japan remained an ally after the war. Because of that Japanese war crimes and their direct responsibility for the loss of a further 20 million lives in China was almost forgotten in the propagandalike public relations attempts by the USA to sell the American people on the idea of Japan as a new ally. There's still a lot of animosity about that and I'm sure it'll come to the surface sooner or later with the way China is gaining exponentially more relevance and air time on the Global floor. Read up about Nanking if you're curious to find out further.

Other than Maple, Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 1, lol. Tho I did hang out around Starcraft with my rl friends...because of that I don't really see it as counting.

I sucked and still suck. Now I just play Zombie mode online since I like cooperative play vs competitive crap where everyone is rude...tho I play the single player mode through for each COD, most of the time more than once. I sort of approach it the same way people approach silly mobile games like Candy Crush, etc. I just put it in and mindlessly shoot things till I'm bored and the first person shooter mood has passed.

Someone mentioned Dark Souls, which might count for me too, maybe Demon Souls if it was in there too...though that sort of online play isn't what I think of as online. You mostly just see peoples deaths replayed and maybe someone invades and tries to kill you. Not sure if invading was part of Dark Souls 1, tho. I definitely don't remember running into it before. I see it a bit in Bloodborne, tho.
