Basil Keylogger Warning

Some slimeball has been keylogging Basil users and stealing their accounts then posting a YouTube video with the hacked accounts that's supposedly a "Mapcrash being used in Fm", but when you go to the link in the video to get the "map crash", the file is actually a keylogger and you end up losing your accounts.

If you see anyone posting anything like this, PM a Mod immediately so we can remove it, and DON'T download the file in the video description link.

If you DID download this thing, Microsoft Security Essentials (free from Microsoft, Google it) will detect and remove it.

Ah... why am I still surprised by people's reactions?
Once again a strange and in my opinion misplaced sense of "superiority" which supposedly justifies illegitimate and harmful acts such as theft, harassment and if it's about real life issues even worse stuff... Frankly we as individuals and a team disagree. When something's against the rules it's always against the rules. And that's why we care. And I care because I don't think I am better than other people and don't think anybody deserves to lose an account.
Thanks, Bob. I didn't know about this.

Sheesh, I'll honestly never ever understand this ridiculous "law of the jungle" mentality of the Internet. Probably an anonimity thing. Things that happen to faceless people never really hit home.
@BobR: I reformatted by computer and i got a 60 day trail off that, so its good right?
It's OK if you're still within the 60 day trial. You can check by opening the anti-virus (usually from the task-bar icon) and checking the "About" or "Help" tab to see what it says about when the subscription to the virus signatures expires.
My norton says that nothing is detected so im guessing im alright, right?
Should be OK.
Make sure your Norton subscription is up to date though. If the subscription expires and it's not renewed, Norton can't protect against newer things like viruses/trojans.

@Dausu It was her time to fly away to the land of grownup ponies...
How do you know if it's a keylogger?
I downloaded the file and scanned it. It comes up as a "backdoor trojan".
Also the fact that its obviously being posted from multiple Basil accounts that have almost certainly been keylogged and hacked.
@BobR: I was only joking however this does in fact raise a point that was severely discussed about MrB and people sucking up to him rather that treating him like a regular person.
Well, quite seriously, if the slimeball who's doing this wants to come forward and protest that he's being attacked under Rule #1, that might be different.
As it is, he's a faceless, cowardly little script kiddie who's downloaded a keylogger kit trying to steal peoples' accounts and is hiding behind the identities of the people he stole from. Under those circumstances, the term "slimeball" definitely applies.
Who's stupid enough to just be like "oh wow a video that I have to download to watch! oh ok theirs nothing wrong with this picture at all". If anyone is stupid enough to do this you honestly don't deserve sympathy for what happens. Use ur brain kids seriously.
It's more than just "download a video"... it's a "socially engineered" scam to get people to download something that turns out to be harmful.
And there are people who will fall for it, as evidenced by the fact that the slimeball obviously has hacked Basil accounts to distribute his links.

@Dausu Yup... she grew up and left Neverland, leaving the Lost Boys behind, going on into that big adventure called "Real Life".

@Elleee
@daStrike
It's kind of like the keylogger opens a Notepad file hidden on your computer and everything you type goes into it- your usernames, passwords, letters to Grandma, homework, anything you type. Then once a day the keylogger sends the Notepad file to the slimeball over the Internet and opens a new Notepad file to record the next day's typing. Then the slimeball goes through the Notepad file the keylogger sent him, looking for what looks like login names and passwords and he can just log into your Basil account and post his keylogger links under your name so everyone who trusts you will rush off to get keylogged too.

You never see it, but it sees everything you type.
(There are other more sophisticated keyloggers that can take screenshots of mouse clicks too, so they can even record your Maplestory PIC too, in pictures.)

This is why it's important to be very, very careful about what you click on over the Internet and don't trust anything that sounds too good to be true.

@aznstyles Be my guest...
Not t sound like a total noob (I'm not good w/ computer stuff, only 14 lol) but how does copying & pasting your pw (if that's what you're doing) stop from the key loggers getting your pw?
i'm a noob too, but I think it's cuz keylogging is about looking at what keys you've typed on your keyboard. copy and pasting doesn't require you to physically do this so, yeah.

@Qoltera You would have had to have gone to the link in the YouTube description, downloaded the file there and run it to be infected. Just watching the video isn't a problem.

@OutOfLaw As above, you would have had to run the file from the link in the video description. That would have given you the keylogger, regardless of whether you play Maplestory or not. No telling what the slimeball would have done with anything he intercepted from you.

Is it on youtube? Or is it on the basilmarket videos? Thanks for notifiying us! I hope I didn't accidentally click it and get keylogged </3 I dont remember doing any of it but you never know I remember seeing something about a mapcrash but don't remember clicking it or anything. My Norton didn't pop up with anything weird either so I hope I'm okay

@MrGoates Considering it's concerning keyloggers being posted in General Maplestory, and it's intention is to steal Maplestory accounts...

@GuardianCreator Lol.. in a way I'm kind of glad the Rankings page has been screwed up lately.. my red racing suit expired, so if I update my avatar it'll disappear and I'll be back to wearing my regular black dress.. er.. robe..

@Zora: Oh sorry.. I meant (this post) on the main page like all the other notices ([penguin icon?] "GMS Tempest Info and Discussion&quot. Or is that only a Mr.B privilage?

While the guide holds integrity in most cases what's been proliferating is this video link thingy.. so yeah.. That's what I was trying to get at.
They're stupid enough to try hacking on MapleStory... They deserve to get hacked?

Why the hell do you mods care? If I were a mod, I'd just let those people get hacked.

Cause if they're trying to download the map crash to obviously use on other players. If a GM found out, they would get perma banned straight away.

So why not let them get hacked? It's the same thing except the mesos they lose stay in the economy.
He's got a point....

@TurtleBack It's not just Maple and Basil that can be hacked, the slimeball will see all passwords for all logins, credit card numbers, whatever.
Also it's a selfish motivation- there'll be 10,000 threads wanting to know how to clean keyloggers off people's computers if we let this happen, and I'd rather not spend all that time fixing people's computers.

@drokons We react-
-when we see something.
-when it's reported.
-when we're PM'd about it.

@VoidWreakz Just avoid it altogether. To be infected you have to download and execute a file, but there's no reason to be taking chances with shifty links.
