Why do french people refuse to talk english

I dont understand why. They get it in school, but they always refuse to talk it.
Is it a conspiracy? Is it the illuminati? Is it the government? Is it Nexon?

Enlighten me.

You guys believe you are the center of the world.
You guys have one of the highest rate of unilingual people in the industrialised contries.
You guys still prefer to show the world the most idiotic personalities on television instead of important science / historical / ... figures.
You guys are known around the world to be rude / hostile.
You guys are the one who still nickname / trashtalk about alot of cultures (Frogs is a common example).
And the list goes on and on >.<

Anyway, to answer the thread here's why alot of French people would rather speak French over English:
They have a horrible accent! The French pronunciation from France tends to tell every letter in a word wich ends up by giving a sort of 'tough' pronunciation while English is a fluid langage. Also, alot of them tend to have trouble with some of the phonetics from certain letters (th, e, h, ...)

Now I'm no master of history, but I've been told that France and Britain haven't had such a great one together, so French people still feeling the inherited disdain would likely refuse to speak the language of their old enemies.
Just so you know, France actually helped you during you're independance war against Britain. The Liberty Statue was actually a gift from France to celebrate your independance as well. Also, you should learn that alot of English words / expression actually come from French ('tennis', all the vocabulary around the kitchen, ...).
anyway, it's not a disdain, it's mostly about the different phonetic between the 2 langages and the idology of a high-amount-of-people-speaking-French-means-you-don't-have-to-speak-another-langage

@MrAbyss: Oh well, as I've said on the first line: nvm

Excuse me?
I agree that French is not the best language (though there's no real "best&quot, but i'm far from being an "ignorant idiot".
I am French, and am actually fluent in both French and English, though the first one is obviously my native tongue.

@Singaporean : I'm sorry you had to deal with such assholes, but let's be honest : most tourists are assholes, wherever they come from.
In France i see plenty of Spanish, English and American people asking for directions in their own language and expecting US to figure out what they're saying, or pushing us to hop on the bus, or even almost run over us while driving.
But that's just tourists in general.

I'm not very fond of France or anything of the likes, and we do have our ups and downs, but many of us now actually speak at least a bit of English, which can't be said for Americans who barely know any French words or phrases beside stupidities found in American shows like "omelette du fromage" which is not even grammatically correct.

So before insulting, dissing or assuming people are rude based only on a few, look at your own side of things first.

I personally always act like a gentleman towards both men and women and help people lift their luggage whenever i see they seem tired or just not physically able.
A lot of us are nice people, though as always the louder crowd remains the biggest stain.

It's pretty basic history: the British and the French have a long-time rivalry and so they dislike English speakers for the most part.

TS ik what you're saying. Sometimes here in NYC you get these rude french people and it's like ONLY french people. They go into stores and mess up the clothes. They try to ask you directions in french sometimes even though it's AMERICA, and they're just generally rude. Tried exiting the train since it was my stop and a bunch of french tourists virtually push me inside the train instead of letting me off. Not saying french people are the only rude tourists but they're the rudest. Even online, some games i've played they try to speak to me in french and I go out of my way to tell them I cannot understand but they still persist. Other nationalities simply talk the language of their upbringing amongst themselves but it's like the french expect you to know french.

I'm the exact opposite - I go to school and learn French, but I don't talk in French.

Also, what do you mean they don't talk English? If French is their first language, they'd use it over another language.

Why did the countries where a romance language is the main language forget how to speak Latin? THAT my friend, is a serious question.

OT: Why don't we speak Spanish or French even though we learn it in school?
